Contacted carbjunkys and their current "Carb 5/16 throttle bushing repair kit" can not be used on BBD's. Anyone know of a current reamer source/kit that specifically works with the BBD? |

why does the kit not work on the BBD? I have a kit from Cliffs high performance carburetors that has a self guided drill bit that is used for Q-jet's that also have the 5/16 throttle shaft on the primary side. I dont know if it is any different than the carbjunky kit but it might be worth looking into. Google Cliff's High Performance than you can call and see if his kit will work with your BBD. If this one doesnt work there are other kits available out there. Google Carter BBD throttle shaft bushing repair kit and you will see the options. |

It seems it should work based on several Jeep forums....at $38 it's reasonable enough to try. My 72 Carter BBD shaft measures .295 so I called carbjunky to find out the OEM clearances between shaft and bushing to verify it worked and got the "it only works on Holley and Quads". So the desired clearance is the real issue for me to try it. I googled for a couple of hours with plenty of info from $200 reamers (Canada) on down. Also several detailed machining steps for the bushing installment including marking throttle plates to reinstall in exact original location and pressing bushing into location with epoxy on it. Just seems with all the chatter on BBD here that a few must have tightened up the shaky throttle shafts rather than to leave it to a carb shop. |

ok, now i understand. what you need is the correct size bushing, preferably in "oil lite" material and then you can find the correct reamer or drill bit. you can find the right drill bit and modify it as a pilot [by grinding half way] I wonder if you could use a 1/4 bushing and ream it out to your size that you need. just thinking out loud. you could in theory use an actual 5/16 shaft. would require some fab work though. bushings are readily available but finding the reamer would be a bit harder I guess. Oilite (spelled that way) is porous. You want non-porous bushings. Delrin or solid bronze or brass.

http://tinyurl.com/obl8tdn has 5/16 ID brass bushings with 3/8 od & align reamer. Seller only know the Quad & Holley application works. Especially since a Quad carb reamer was successfully used on a BBD. That gives some credence to using the above kit on a BBD. The kit sounds like the hard brass bushings noted. Just wonder if a .295 throttle shaft to a .3125 bushing ID is similar to factory new carb? Jeep forum shows BBD throttle shaft bushing replacement. Used was a reamer LOOKING like the above reamer. Several suggested they have had good results. They put a collar on the reamer to lock in a cutting depth. I was hoping someone in Slant Forum actually has done it with success. But I guess there always has to be someone to do it the first time. I have a parts carb to practice on. I'd feel better knowing stock throttle shaft to bore clearances before beginning. |

| Post subject: | Have Reamer And Bushing Dimensions; Did Machining On BBD |
Reamer has a .311 shank. That allows the .313 ID bushings to slide over smoothly. My BBD throttle shaft measured a consistent .308. This means: 1) the difference between installed bushings (.313) 2) and throttle shaft (.308) 3) is about .005 difference. Bushing length is .5 and easily fits the throttle body casting. It will definitely not work on a Holley 1920: 1) throttle shaft diameter too small 2) body of Holley casting blocks reamer access |
