I want to align the notch on the crankshaft pully with "0" on the timing case tab to get TDC on number one spark plug.

What is the best way to turn the crankshaft? I have no battery or loom in the car at the moment.

Do I turn the crankshaft clockwise to achieve the above?

Thanks.[/i]

You can turn it either direction to get to TDC, doesn't make much difference.

A lot of times you can grab the fan blade and turn it, as long as your fan belt is in decent shape it will turn the crank as well. Having the spark plugs out will make it even easier.

Buy a crank bolt and use a breaker bar to roll it over.

I like to always roll things in the "normal" direction. That way any slack is measured the way it would evolve when running ....and there is always some "slack" or tolerance.

You will need to roll it over many times ,,,,you might as well set up for it.

+1 to Sandy in BC suggestion, that is the way I do it. Remove the plugs too, without the plugs you should be able to do it easily even as Chief915 said. The advantage of the crank bolt+ breaking bar is that you can better control how much you turn it. Check before if your slant has the crank bolt or not, holding the harmonic balancer in place (not really needed, because the balancer should stay in place without it) . Some cars had it, some not.

If you are installing the distributor, don't forget to check your cam position also so you're not 180 out.

Been there, done that.

What is a crank bolt and how do I know if I am out 180 degrees?

At the moment I have the notch in the pulley at the "0" mark on the timing cover tab, I have the dizzy installed with the rotar at about the 5 o,clock position.

You have to make sure piston is coming up on compression stroke or another way to say it is to roll engine over until both intake & exhaust valves are closed on number one cylinder. When number one cylinder (being cylinder closest to radiator) is on compression stroke, damper mark on zero, then one can install distributor such that rotor button points to about five o'clock.

Keep in mind a four stroke engine's crank shaft makes two revolutions (720 degrees) to complete fill, compression, power, and exhaust strokes.
