Post subject:  What to ask when getting the engine rebuilt

If I determine that the slant 6 needs to be rebuilt, what is an approximate price for the job? Lets say I just want it stock, not interested in shaving down the head to change stroke/compression etc... 225 3.7 I see the kits online. So assuming all the parts in the kit are needed, and I want the shop to remove and reinstall in my car. I am in So Cal btw. Is paint usually included? thanks for any help. I am at a bit of a crossroads on this car. Which I bought for a Father Son experience, thinking the engine was solid, but has somehow developed a nasty knocking rod sound at certain rpm (not in gear).
I made a video of it if you want to help diagnose based on sound.

Check your flxplate to convertor bolts.....you may have a reprieve.

I would guess $2000 for the rebuild with re and re.

Much is to be saved by doing the re and re yourself.

Do yourslf a favour and do at least a little block decking for compression.

Is it easy to access the Flexbolts? Or does the transmission have to come down?

Disconnect battery, unbolt starter lay it off to side, remove spark plugs, using fan and pushing on fan belt & pulling on blades roll engine over until first of four flex plate bolts comes into view. If you find loose bolts, one at a time remove bolt, degrease hole with brake or carb cleaner, dry, apply blue Loctite and torque bolt down to 55 lb. ft. then move on to the next bolt.

This is good info. So let me ask, does the flexplate spin all the time when it is running? OR does it only spin when I put it into Drive/Reverse?

The flexplate is bolted to the end of the crankshaft, so it and the outer body of the torque converter always spin with the engine, even in neutral.

That is great info and I plan on checking it out. But let me ask, If the engine is not running, will the flexplate remain locked?
I am trying to think how i can torque up to 55lbs is the flexplate is moving?
Forgive me if these questions sound idiotic.

Flexplate to crankshaft is 55ft-lb. Flexplate to torque converter is 270in-lb or 22.5 ft-lb.

Last time I checked mine, I left the plugs and everything else in, just removing the starter. I turned the engine over by pushing down on the belt to put extra tension on it then using the fan to move the crank. Then torque it through the starter access hole.

Having the plugs in will hopefully be enough to prevent the crank from turning. If not, you can have a helper do what you did earlier with the fan/pulley (or just grasp the crank pulley). Or wedge a flathead into one of the torque converter teeth.
