I have a 225 slant 6 with the Holley 1945 carb. I've read Dan's thread with the .pdf files and even the service video from way back explaining the carburetor. My question is, what do all the different idle adjustment screws do? When I get in my car after it's sat for a while, I press the pedal all the way to the floor, then let up and hold it a bit down while I start my car. The rpms usually get unnecessarily high (in my opinion, I don't have a tach handy). I let it run for about 7 seconds then tap it again to bring it back down per the owner's manual. IS THAT my fast idle that makes it rev so quickly after starting? How do I adjust it to rev less? Thank you for the explanation. I could just be doing it wrong : ) |

The correct starting procedure for a cold engine (means hasn't been started in at least three hours in hot weather, at least an hour in cold weather) is to press the accelerator to the floor once and take your foot all the way off of it, then crank the engine until it starts. It will run fast. Then after 3 (warm out) to 45 (cold out) seconds, kick the accelerator and let go of it. Then shift into gear and drive off. Carburetor operation, repair, and adjustment manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. |

Those were the files and videos that I mentioned in the above post. If the car idles too fast after pressing my foot all the way down once, how would I adjust that out on the carb? Is it just a matter of unscrewing the fast idle screw from the 2nd camming position to the 1st? |

No. All the cam steps are relevant. You don't get to pick which step is used; they're all used. If the fast idle speed is too fast (as measured with tachometer, not with ear, and with all other adjustments made beforehand) then you lower the fast idle speed by turning the fast idle screw counterclockwise. |

That's what I wanted to know. Thanks! |
