Post subject:  Which master cylinder for 4-wheel drums?
Which master cylinder should be in my '74 Swinger with 4-wheel drum brakes? I'm getting conflicting info from parts shops and also from the shop manual. The manual says the master cylinder bore should be 1+1/32" for drum brakes and 15/16" for disc brakes. It also has the two attached figures. Clearly there was some printing mistake because conflicting information is given. The MC that was installed in my car looks like the asymmetrical one in Fig. 1 but it has a 15/16" bore. So I'm assuming the symmetrical MC shown in Fig. 2 is the correct one for drum brakes. Can anyone confirm this?

Same reservoir size is drum/drum

15/16 is for disc power brakes

1 1/32 is for manual brakes (drum/drum & disc/drum)


So you need a 1 1/32.


If you have drum/drum & power; I don't know......

are you sure? im under the impression that manual brakes need a smaller piston diameter to increase hydraulic advantage.

Manual brakes have more leverage at the pedal.

If you don't hit the floor with the smaller MC, you will get more leverage that way too.
