Post subject: | Dart short circuit |
Greetings from Finland Now I got a huge problem with my 67 Dart. I apparently have an short circuit in the acc circuit that i need help and tips with. Today for some reason the car started to short every time I put the key in the first pos. witch gives power to the coil and flashers and so on. It doesnt completely short it because my Oil light and break warning light comes on very dim and the dome light dimms too. Also the alternator gauge shoots to the far end of discharge. So apparently I am loosing Volts somewhere and a lots. I have tried to disconnect the most that runs trough the igniniton lock as coil, alternator, starter ballast, voltage regulator, oil sender, external temp and fuel gauges(powered thru coil). But everytime I turn the key the above happens. I am suspecting that I have a break in the wiring harness to the alternator & coil but I think wherever it would run would simply not work and not short it. Second suspicion would be the ignition lock ,but that is in pretty good shape and is solid and so on. Third suspicion is the bulkhead connector, but there i don´t know what to do. Oh and it doesn´t burn any fuses as it does this so apparently it doesn´t run thru the fusebox. Also I am able to turn on the headlights without any problems. I know the problem could be anywhere as it it electrical but any tips on where to start looking and how would be helpfull as google was little to no help. |

First look here for wire diagram. Second if amp gage is pegging to discharge with nothing turned on, you have a big amp draw somewhere. Battery to bulkhead connector has 14 gage fusable link on engine side, energy flows from battery through bulkhead connector, amp gage and back to alternator, often this circuit has problems. Disconnect as many circuits as possible from battery, such as alternator, ignition, then check amp gage. If no discharge, one at a time bring disconnected circuits back on line. If you let electrons flow long enough smoke & fire will point the way to what needs repair, so be carful. Use your nose to sniff for hot electrical smell that may help narrow down the search. Alternators can develop internal shorts. |

Thanks for the help. The problem sorted itself out, which makes me terrified of when it will strike again. The only thing i did was fiddle with the ign and a couple of other loose wires that I think was to the radio. Couldn't find any connectors to connect them to. And voila everything worked again. Does anyone btw know what brand of radio was installed in the 67 Dart at the factory? I have a nice looking one that looks like what they could have used at the time but as above, the connectors don't fit. |
