First hello to everyone. I'm new in here but I've been reading in here for awhile and lately went thru the changing rear seal adventure. I followed the guide in here and installed a new rubber seal and pan gasket. Motor is a 1980 225 1 BB in a van on a floor shift 4 speed OD. I honestly was very surprised that even in 1980 there was a rope seal. It had turned to rock. Piece by piece I picked it out of the slot. Did all this with pan off and crank in. After couple days of picking and poking got the old seal out. Installed the new with gaps at 2 and 8 position. Used RTV on bottom half. I put new rubber tabs on the seal carrier and used RTV. I think it leaks worse now than before. This appears to be a common problem on the slant 6 but the amount of oil leaking is not good. It's not crankcase pressure that I've checked. Only other thing I've ever seen leak like this was a Corvair. I've read about the freeze plug but with only 38K actual and 28 years in dry storage in nice dry building I don't see rust on the cam plug being very likely. Vehicle is very rust free and oil pressure is 3/4 on the gauge most of the time. What's the success rate on the rubber seal ? I really dread taking the pan down again. I'm going to look up between flywheel and block to see if oil is coming from the plug behind the cam but if not what then ? What's the trick to this ? |

For me... I have sealing success, with rubber lip type main seals, about 50% of the time.If I really want a leak free main seal I use the rope and pack it tight. FYI: You can not correctly "pack" a rope seal, with the crank installed. DD |

Thanks I read the seal the pan and did all that too. My lessons on rope seals were from Hudson's. Crank's not going to come out so can't do rope seal. Since it's a van I can drop pan out of the way and try again. The one thing I did I now question is did I let the RTV cure long enough ? A drip here and there would be fine but leaving trails is too much. I've also looked over oil pump and it's dirty but it's not the culprit. I'll know more after today and a good look underneath with mirror and light. Try to see if by slim chance it's the cam plug. Quote: Quote: ...What's the success rate on the rubber seal...

Post subject: | Oil leak fixed |
Finally found out where I went wrong. Two things I did different this time. I used a long piece of heat shrink tubing to pull the upper half of the seal into place. Found size that just fit over seal then shrunk it with heat gun. Gave me the perfect tool to pull the seal in and then just pulled the heat shrink off the seal. I also did not use RTV on the end of the seals. Found that RTV had rolled over seal lip and pretty much trashed the lip on the rubber seal. There was even a little dab stuck to the crank. I only used a very small dab the first time but it was clear that it had stuck to the crank. This time I used Hi Tack. I didn't want to have to wait a day for the RTV to cure. Just brushed a thin layer into seal retainer housing groove. Put it together. I also used it on the outer sides of the seal retainer housing and the rubber tabs. I did not put any sealer on the ends of the crank seals. My big leak was from the rubber seal for the back of the oil pan. Found one corner folded over. Thankfully it's now dry as a bone. |
