Post subject:  Road Draft Tube to PCV

My '61 D100 had a road draft tube. Right now, it just has a breather and a fill cap, which is about the same as what was on it before because the tube was pretty much clogged up.

I've replaced the valve cover with one of those nasty el-cheapo chrome ones and I'd like to install a PCV valve and plumbing. I have no problems drilling a hole for the valve, but I need to know what parts to get.

Dan, if you're looking, this will ultimately be plumbed to your aluminum manifold and 2BBL carb.

Recommend you put the stock valve cover back on (or an aluminum one) -- those Chinese chrome ones are junk. See Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3. If you are bound and determined to use the chrome valve cover on your engine, and if you can hack the bolt holes so they line up OK, then set up the breather and PCV this way.

The bolt holes lined up OK. I know, it's not nearly the quality of the original. But even putting the original back on, my problem isn't solved. Since it had a road draft tube, there's no plumbing for the PCV valve - where do I put the output of the PCV valve?

The problem with the road draft tube is that once it's unplugged, either I don't drive fast enough to get good flow through the tube, so it's not working or else more than just "dirty air" comes out of the tube (which accounts for the nasty layers of greasy gunk on the front of the bellhousing).

And no baffles, so you're gonna suck oil out of the motor through the PCV system.

Run an oilproof hose from the PCV valve to the large nipple at the base of the carburetor I sold you. If you're still using a 1bbl for the foreseeable future, you'll need one with provisions for PCV. I may or may not have a suitable one, depending on the particulars of your throttle linkage. Email me a pic of the rear of your present carb (air cleaner removed) if you'd like me to check.

Yup. Road draft tubes don't work unless you're going fast enough to generate a road draft!

That's the factory self-rustproofing option

OK, this is making sense to me. I'm going to install the new manifold and carb this month, so I'll set it up with the PCV valve routed to the carb.

Nobody ever called me Lead Foot Larry!

Thanks for the help!

I'm finally getting around to doing this (it took me this long to install the manifold and carb that I bought from you, Dan).

In another thread, you recommended a breather cap and grommet, which I bought. Then you said to use a standard Chrysler PCV valve. What is a standard Chrysler PCV valve? Is there a part number?

I prefer the genuine Chrysler item, which seems to be better quality/less troublesome than aftermarket units. Current part number is 5175 351AA.
