We have a 61 Dodge Slant 6 push button automatic. New to slant 6's, need to know what type of tranny fluid to use. Someone recommended Dextron III.

Yep, that's the standard fill. If your doing a complete drain including the torque converter you can use the fancy fluids such as ATF+4 or the Mercon successors (I think they are up to VI now?) with added cost. Dexron/Mercon III will do just fine though.

Dexron III would work fine, but don''t use it. It is an obsolete fluid and therefore it is only available in poor quality, or if you find remaining stocks in a reputable brand it's not cheaper than the current fluid. It is not worth skimping on fluid quality if you are going to the hassle and mess of doing a trans fluid change.

The current Dexron is Dexron-VI ("Dexron Six"). It is superior to all previous Dexrons in every way, and is available at very reasonable price from all the reputable brands. Use it.

(Dexron-VI is also markedly superior to ATF+4. Mercon does not need to enter this discussion because it's largely irrelevant.)

Before you change the fluid, do yourself and your transmission a big favour and pick up the parts described in this thread. And if it's fluid-change time, you're also due to adjust the bands.

I guess it depends on what's available in your area and what may be on sale. If you can get Dexron-VI for not much more go for it. I don't recall specifics but my last recent trip through the auto fluid aisle showed the price difference was still significant.
