Post subject:  Knocking sound

Looking for help again from all you wise and helpful people.. (stock -65 Valiant, 225, 3sp-manual)

I have a knocking sound coming from (the engine?). It sounds a bit like something is hitting something else with every revolution. The knocking gets faster when I increase rpms.

The sound disappears when I depress the clutch (only need to depress a little). Sound is same in neutral, 1,2,3 and reverse. I haven't dared drive it. Observations made just in the driveway.

It's not a valve gear sound, but rather sounds like it's comming from below.

The z-bar needs new berings/bushings. There is looseness there. I'll be ordering those and changing them. But where is the sound coming from? Aybody got similar experiences?

Any help is greatly appreciated, as always.

If noise is not related to internal rotating parts such as worn wrist pins, or rod barring I would suspect worn sagging engine and transmission mounts allowing engine to move too much.

Something connected to engine could be knocking against some body part.

Where noise abates when clutch is depressed, suspect Z bar to be where the noise is coming from. When clutch is depressed that action could have enough force exerted on bar it to prevent its movement. Z Bar part is in direct contact with a flopping wobbling engine due to bad engine mounts and stationary front sub frame when repositioned from depressing clutch.

Just wanted to thank all you who helped me with my problem. Most of the replies seem to have wanished, unfortunately.

I ended up removing the engine. I tried first from below but I don't think I could ever have made the oil pan gasket seal properly, even if I had managed to remove the oil pan from below (I gave up).

It was, as we suspected, the crank shaft (well a connecting rod bolt to be exact) that kept hitting the oil pan after I had accidentally dented the oil pan. It took me 15 minutes to straighten the dent and 4 months to get the engine out and back in (things go a bit slow when you are at the same time an invalid and not-so-gifted a mechanic).

This was not how I had planned to celebrate her 50th birthday year, but it sure was a pleasure to sit down behind the wheel and drive off after so many months...
