This is probably known info but I thought I would share.

I found a complete A904 trans in a junkyard '82 SL6 Diplomat, which I pulled out along with everything that goes with it.

I had been doing some reading during this past week regarding which transmissions were lockup and when, and also which were the wide-ratio versions.

Well after getting the transmission home and the converter off, I can positively debunk the statement I read recently on a well-known site that said "...starting in 1981 all automatic transmissions were lock-up types".

Nope. This is the numbers-matching trans from that '82 Diplomat, built 7/24/81 and it's NON-lockup.

It depended on the application. I once had a 1986 Dodge Van with a slant six that was built for California. It was a non-lockup and the factory service manual confirmed it.

I have found this one out the hard way! I have an 82 dip trans I want to put in my 89 D100 got a new torque converter and nope won't fit counted the splines and it's 27 non lock up... Now what converter should one use on that trans? I looked it up as a 77 aspen and there are two different ones. One said high stall pink label and one just saying 27 spline both having different part numbers. Dacco 384 and 762

I'm not surprised, that car is an early production or build date for 82 model year. Probably Chrysler was using up whatever 81 parts were still in the pipeline before switching over to the lock-up units. Chrysler was just beginning to come out of a financial malaise at that time due to a successful launch of K Cars; every penny counted.
