I will be using a 60 amp alternator in my 62 Signet. Is there anything I need to consider before I use it?

Thanks.

Make sure the wiring is upgraded to handle the extra current.

Yes, there's a fair amount you need to consider and do. See here. Also, make sure you are using a good alternator, not a "remanufactured" unit, unless you want problems.

I also recived this advice from another source - "Won't have any effect on the car - all it does is increase available capacity and stop rev flare when on High beam . . . Because they are load sensitive - they only supply what's drawn".

this is true until you start adding electric fans and stereo, and electric fuel pump, and electronic ignition, etc

A 30 amp alt will supply 30 amps max, whether the load is moderate or large. If your battery is very low (just barely able to start the engine) the alternator will still only charge at 30 amps, minus the electrical loads (ign, lights radio, etc). If you up grade to a 60 amp alt, it will now charge at 60 amp, minus the loads. This will be on wireing that was designed for 30 amps.

This person is only partly right.
If you put a 60 amp load on that electrical system in your car your in for a fire.
The wiring in your car was not designed to handle that type of load.
Follow the instructions in the links that Dan sent you and you will be fine.

Ignorant advice like this is best ignored with a smile and a nod at most.
