Firstly about 1000 miles ago I replaced both inner & outer bearings because the old ones were sloppy, and showed some surface markings thinking this would cure the problem. Car is equipped with KH Disk brakes. As header states, front wheel barings won’t stay adjusted, and loosen up enough to cause slop in frontend. I have adjusted the damn things several times in the last 600 miles following FSM method; torque to 90 inch lbs, while turning wheel, and back off tin lock nut one notch to zero runout. I have experimented backing off half a notch so that there is no 6-12 o’clock movement, and after a while it loosens up. When barings are at zero runout the car drives nicely, once they loosen or back-off handling becomes sloppy when encountering imperfections in pavement. This is driving me nuts. Any hints? One more thing: While I’m at it here, what is the method of checking upper ball joints for wear? I have been jacking lower control arm up enough to allow a fulcrum & lever under tire to move suspension vertically while looking & feeling for movement in joint. |

If the spindle nut cage and cotter pin are installed, how can it loosen up at all? The only thing I can think of is the race wasn't fully seated and kept sinking further into the hub. Or the race is wearing excessively. |

You're going to have to pull the rotors and see if the races are tight in the hubs. The only time I could not keep front wheel bearing adjustment a race was loose in the hub and the hub was being destroyed. |
