Post subject:  9 inch drum to disc kit !!

I was checking out magnumforceracing.com last night and noticed that they offer a disc brake swap for 9 inch drum spindles for 61-62 lancer(same as my 60 Valiant) which means that it will also fit most other 9 inch Mopars.Its all willwood components but does not include master cylinder or prop. valve but does offer a 30 pound savings over the drum setup(or so they claim) and costs 675$.Has anyone used any of these kits and if so do you like them?

Hmm you've got me curious.. they show a kit for a 64-69 barracuda with 9" spindles as well. Those are the A body cudas aren't they? That would confirm compatability with other 9" setups... And since its pre 72 I'm assuming that its made for a 4" bolt pattern. In the little details they mention, they say "racing" calipers so I wonder if the setup is practical for street driving. Might have to call them to get some more details.

It is likely a nice setup, and fine for fair weather street driving (no snow or salt or sand/dirt). I really doubt you'll save 30 lbs as those 9" drums are pretty durn light - maybe 10 or 20.

Lou I don't car about the weight really, just after better brakes. In all honesty if it weighted more then the stock I would be surprised but it wouldn't be a deterrent from buying the kit

As Mark pointed out, no master cylinder with this setup. They sell a separate unit but will it require any sort of adapters or will just bolt on? For the additional cost of a master cylidner and valve.. I'm guessing thats $200 moves cost of kit up to $875. For $800 I can get a SSBC kit and use a 10" drum brake spindle (which I already have from a stripped parts car) or a $1000 MPbrakes kit with their own spindle. And you know the master cylinders included in the above 2 kits will fit right....

Curious... the MPBrakes kit uses 11" rotors, and it said minimum wheel size is 14". The SSBC kit uses 11" rotors, and it said "Disc brake wheels" must be used. Did disc brakes come on 14" wheeled cars?

14" wheels, or at least the rallyes, should work just fine with those 11" kits.

I think people read too much into "matching" master cylinders to disc brakes. The main thing is the front/rear bias, which you can get a $40 adjustable valve for. Just get a front disc/rear drum MC off a 70s Dart, or get an adapter plate ($40 from arengineering.com) and a reman mid-80s-90s diplomat (small bore) or truck (big bore) MC from a parts store for $35. I have the big bore one on my '64 and it works like a charm.

I called magnumforce today and they said that most of their heavy duty kits end up on the street but they only offer 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 bolt patterns and after adding their mc and prop valve the price climbs closer to 900$ but I agree with Lou that a factory mopar mc and valve should 3work just fine.I think Im just gonna keep diggin till I find a 73 up disk setup or even maybe a earlier a-body with 4 inch bolt pattern(so I dont have to buy 2 more adapters to mount my free 16/8 firebird wheels-I already bought a complete set from Stockton wheelworks).

My '73 318 Duster came with the 11" rotors and 14 inch steelies from the factory. I got 15 inch cop wheels for my swap to 12 inch rotors.


The Duster's old 11 inch rotors will be turned and put on the '66 Dart Wagon in place of the 9" drums. Take off parts are great, you buy 'em once and when you get something better, later, use 'em somewhere else in your fleet. :lol:
