Post subject:  Oil pump mount cracked?

I looked at a rebuilt motor today. It has a 5 bolt oil pump. The block, where the 6th bolt goes (the cavity that doesn't go anywhere) appears to have cracked off. It's hard to tell if it was just not cast fully, or if it cracked off, or what. It's a 5 freeze plug block if that means anything. Hopefully thispic is clear enough.

I figured maybe the factory didn't finish casting / machining some blocks in that area if it wasn't necessary.

Looks exactly like the way that pocket was cast on my 1979 cast crank engine.... Haven't checked my 80's block yet to see if it's the same.

That explains it.. I've only got up close and personal with the early 70's slants. After some more digging and comparison to pics here it appears this is a cast crank. No numbers on the pad near the alternator, it was decked.

The head is a drool tube style and has adjustable rockers so it seems someone made a mutt of a motor. If I read the spreadsheet right that combo isn't factory.

How so? Seems its been done on here plenty of times before, just have to be careful to move the entire thing cam to rockers right?

cheesy may not have been the correct word.

closer to broken.

Maybe grind it down so it doesn't look broken.

When I first looked at it, I thought it looked broken and thought of a cheesy fix........

Oh! Lol... Yea my initial impression was something broke off because part of it looked like a fracture (like the rough texture left behind when you bend a piece of metal back and forth to the point it work hardens and snaps) But then I said that if it did start as a 6 bolt oil pump setup it would be thicker then 1/8, not as thin as it is now.

Bad/loose fit on a mold section mod plug, my read.
Looks to've gotten slightly cocked in this case, which would leave the oil galley top wall slightly thin, back by the block's wall.
