I replaced the rear end in my 1964 dart with one from a 1975 dart. Changed grease and replaced gasket. Everything was fine for about a month and then it started making a "Growling" sound(?) Almost sounds like it is coming from the passenger side, but I think it is from the center? How difficult is it to replace AXLE and PINION bearings? I see that they are available. -Thanks for any insights! |

I would bet that it is a axle bearing.So pull the cover and check the gear lube for shinny stuff,if clean then axle it is.If you have a press you can change the axle bearing yourself. If not a good shop should do it for you. |

I have replaced many axle bearings with a hammer and a piece of pipe that matches the diameter of the bearing inner race. |

If it were me, unless you are able to set up the backlash and differential gears, I would either find a different axle or farm the whole job out to a shop. If you replace the pinyin bearing you have to go through the whole process of resetting the mesh between the ring and pinion. I tried to do this on an 8.25 and failed miserably. I am not saying I am super talented, I am saying that this is a job best left to people trained and experienced in doing it. |

Those axle bearings are not too hard to replace,and are often the bad guy. Make sure you replace the seal too. A good shop will replace the axle bearing fairly cheaply, and there is not much to mess up with them. The diagnostic method often used is to run the car in gear, up in the air and listen with a stethoscope. If that does not prove to be the problem, things get dicier. It seems there is no one in our area who knows how to set up a Mopar rear these days. Hopefully the axle bearings are the problem. Sam |
