Post subject:  Electronic Spark Advance (ECC) system bypass?

I have a 1984 Dodge truck with the ECC system (that weird "computer" located in the air filter housing that controls the spark advance). I want it gone. Anyone out there have experience removing and bypassing this system?

Check the "emissions equip" thread down a little ways. I don't know if the ECC got talked about, cuz my Dart is a '76, but there is good info on removing a lot of stuff.

I already posted in that thread. I started a new thread because I'm desperate to get my truck running. I'm new to town, don't have a trustworty mechanic, and no one will do the job because it's "illegal". What a bunch of pansies, eh?

Well, you need a new distributer (and control box I believe) with the related wireing. You will also need a different carb. This is because the one used with the lean burn does not have a vacuum connection (ported) for the vacuum advance your new distributer will have.

Hey,

You do need a new dist out of an electronic ignition car, but thats not hard/expensive to get out of a wreaker (heck i even have one spare if you really need it) and you dont need a carb, the Lean Burn system still uses a ported vaccum sorce to control electronic advance of the timing. Although i reccomend you get a pre-smog carb (a holley 1920 if you have a 1bbl or a Carter BBD if you have a 2bbl)

Heres a link for ya, if you have any other Q's just ask :)

I already have a new carb. That's why I have concluded I need to remove the leanburn system. I upgraded to a 2-barrel carb (scored a 2-barrel intake manifold), which I purchased at Autozone. I don't have the number handy, but it's a basic setup, with only 2 vacuum ports. I think the Autozone guy said it goes to a '72 Aspen. I was just looking for something that lined up with the intake manifold. The new carb is incompatible with my leanburn system for several reasons: the inlet diameter is too wide for the stock air filter housing, it doesn't have the electric choke connections, and there are about 5 fewer vacuum connections.

Thanks, 87Slant_sickness, for the link. That's pretty helpful. I'll see what's available at the junkyard. Last weeks there were only 3 slant six engines there, and they were picked fairly clean.
