On my 85 D100 that we are getting ready to paint.

The right front turn signal / parking light plug was damaged when the truck was wrecked. So I decided to just go ahead and replace both front sockets because the other one looked pretty bad also. Everything worked normally when I started except for a slow flasher. I replaced the stock flasher with a heavy duty one since I am towing a trailer with it.

Replaced right side plug and checked operation, all is well.
Replaced Left side and checked operation and it worked fine.

5 minutes later I check it again and the fuse is blown on the 4 ways and turn signal. Replace fuse to turn signals and it blows immediately. Try again, blows again. Install a 20 amp instead of the 15 amp fuse it calls for (just for a quick check) and it does not blow. I re-installed the stock flasher and put in a 15amp fuse and it did not blow. Is the new HD flasher causing my blown fuse? Or do I need to untape my new wire connections and look for something?

That still does not tell me why my 4 ways are blowing their fuse?

I hate electrical work.

Depending on how you replaced the sockets, spliced in new lamp holder to old harness, or replaced harness back to bulkhead connector lies your answer. If you just spliced on new sockets, I would look for pinched conductor due to front end damage for a short. Also good clean ground to all sockets to eliminate ground side of circuit voltage drop and dim/slow blinking lights is necessary.

Or it could be something altogether unrelated to front/engine compartment portion of lighting harness.

One sure fire way to find that short is to eliminate the fuse, and look for smoke; that is where the short will be found**... LOL

I read somewhere that electrical devices are actually powered by 'smoke''

as after one sees the smoke escaping, typically the electrical device no longer functions.

The actual old sockets worked fine. I replaced the damaged one and it worked fine. When I replaced the good (undamaged one) that seems to be when I had issues. I guess I will start there. I only replaced the socket and about 8" of wiring. Not back to the bulkhead.

Still my question about the flasher. Can the HD flasher be a part of the problem?

No, the flasher is probably not the problem. Most likely is that you got some wires crossed while replacing the socket, and connected the wrong socket wires to the wrong truck wires. Other possibilities include a faulty new socket and a faulty bulb.

Original truck wiring looked like 2 blacks and a yellow on one side and then 2 blacks and a green on the other. So with the new pigtails having 2 blacks and a white, I thought the 2 blacks must go to the 2 blacks and the white to the yellow or green. However, due to my poor lighting under the hood, a problem with my right eye and some general electrical incompetence thrown in there, the 2 blacks were actually 1 black and a dark brown that was dirty enough for me to mistake for black. The white was actually the ground.

What is odd is that the right side seemed to be working Ok after I installed it, but once the Left side was installed it started popping fuses. I'm to dumb to figure it out and now that it works I honestly won't think about it again for 20 years.
