Post subject:  1984 D100 Manual To Power Steering

After 31 years, there's no more adjustment left in my manual steering box. I really want to convert this truck to power steering, and already have the pump and pump bracket to bolt onto the block. I still need the hoses and power steering box, and the steering column piece.

My question is this: What other parts will I need? Will the manual pitman arm work with a power box? Not one of the junkyards within 75 miles of here has a 72-93 Dodge truck whatsoever, at least the ones I've called. Otherwise I'd just snatch all of it at once.

The pitman arms are the same for manual and power in 2wd trucks. One thing to note is that there are two types of power steering boxes. One is a quick ratio and the other is not. They both bolt up the same though. I have a Std. one in my truck and its kinda slow in town. But other than that its fine. Another good thing about going to power steering is that the cores on the boxes are cheaper than the manual ones....

You will also need the power lower section on the steering column. I think I still have mine from when I converted to manual if you need it.

I definitely do need it! PM me the price and where to send the dough.

I could have done this a few years ago all in one shot; a local preacher was scrapping an 88 D150 and I didn't want anything from it because it wasn't a slant six.

If you are going to be playing with the steering box, you might want to consider the gearbox frame strengthening bracket discussed here: http://www.dodgeconnection.com/catalog/ ... 541374.htm

If the factory made one, there is a good chance you should install it. I plan on putting one on my 76 D100.

I never even heard of such a brace, but it looks like I can make one for about $15 and a little time. Looks like a worthwhile upgrade

I will be at my shop this weekend and will grab it. PM me a shipping address and I will get it to you.

I don't want anything for it. To me it's just a piece of junk. :D

Slantzilla-

any chance you have two of those brackets?

LOL let the bidding wars commence. I forgot about having to strengthen up the frame. I just used some thick sheet metal and welded it in.

Sorry Reed, I don't believe I have any of them. Pretty sure there isn't one in my truck.

I've got a little angle iron. Pretty sure I can fab up that little frame support. I read where the frames will crack if you don't have it with power steering.

PM sent.

I remembered to look at my truck today. It is a V-8/power steering truck and it does not have that bracket on it, and appears there never was one.

We have 4 84-86 trucks at the Covalt ranch and none of them have a brace? :? :?

The frame brace I'm talking about was mentioned a bunch on the interwebs, but personally I have never seen one. From what I've read a bunch of people claim their frames cracked without it.

Bad thing is, once I saved up the money and have the time to get said power steering, all the Dodge trucks have vanished from the junkyards within 100 miles from here. It figures. :x
