So i had a problem with the old throttle cable cause it was very rusty.. It made those creaky rusty door sounds when pressing the gas pedal.. Asked my dealer if he had cables for the slanty and he said he only has v8 cables.. Got the cable installed and it works. Problem is that the gas pedal occasionalyl gets really hard to push. The cable that they sent me was too long so i put it in a loop.. Is this okay? Should i shorten it so it's more straight? Is the loop causing the sticky pedal? EDIT: The plastic tube around the cable is too long and the ends of the cable have metal things that hook into the carb and pedal that can't be just hacked down and refitted.. Am i ok to run with this setup or do i need to buy a shorter cable? There isn't any slack or anything. It's just that the tube is looped behind the intake. |

The loop method is fine. This was the recommended way to do it years ago when these cars were more plentiful own the US. These days it is basically fabricate whatever you can that will work. |

The loop method is not fine, and has never been. It causes the cable to bind -- that is why the accelerator gets hard to push. One day your luck will run out and the cable will bind with the throttle open, then you will panic and probably crash. Put in the correct cable, which is about 51cm long (you probably got a cable that's about 77cm long). The one you need is here. |

Interesting. I remember reading many articles about looping the single barrel throttle cable when installing a Super Six. I even did it myself a few times. If Dan has a better part, then you should use it. I was never fond of the looping method, but it worked. |

Not really -- not any more than "Well, yeah, I know I should use my seat belt, but so far I haven't crashed" works. The accelerator cable's wire slides in a nylon sheath inside the cable jacket. The cable length is selected (by the vehicle engineers) so that it has only very slight curves — no loops, and no tight bends or small-radius curves — because those cause the cable wire to saw a groove in the nylon sheath. This traps the wire at random, binding it up. If you're lucky, all that happens is it gets difficult to push the pedal. When your luck runs out, bad things happen. "Just loop it, it'll be fine" is a great example of what you don't know can hurt you.

Yes i need the shorter cable. Thanks dan! It just randomly binds and i've only had problems of it being hard to push from zero to full but never the other way around.. And you can't even pull the pedal back to stop it from accelerating cause the cable just sticks out. |

Just another "heads up": If you run that nylon jacketed cable too near the exhaust, the nylon melts around the center push-pull wire. While it is hot you won't notice it. But when it cools somewhat it locks down on the center wire tightly. FUBARed. Had it happen on brand new airplanes: factory changed their drawings to re-route it. |

We probably need the same cable? I was really surprised that Rock Auto does not list them. Unless I overlooked it. |

Rockatuo lists two throttle cables for a 78 Dodge D100 with a 225. It doesn't specify if it a single or two barrel applicaiton. One cable is listed as 28 inches long, the other is listed as 29.25 inches ong. I guess between the two the shorter one would be better for the two barrel? ATP Y401 {#3820952} Length 29.25 $14.65 PIONEER CA8805 {#3820952} 28" $27.79 1978-1979 D series two barrel throttle cable part number is 3820 952 January 1980 to October 1980 the D series two barrel throttle cable is part number 3418 836 Post October 1980 the two barrel throttle cable part number is 4241 226 but that won't tell you the throttle cable length. Unless that second number in BOTH the ATP and Pioneer part numbers is the interchange number, in which case those are both two barrel carb throttle cables. In which case either of those rockauto cables should work. For a 1985 truck rockauto lists Pioneer CA8408 (#4241226) for $21.79 4241 226 is listed in the 78-80 Dodge parts book as the post October 1980 two barrel throttle cable part number, so Pioneer CA8408 might work for you. Interesting. Rockauto also lists the 3820952 cable as the only cbale for the 1976 slant six powered D100. Maybe the two barrel cable is the same as the one barrel or the aftermarket only makes two barrel cables? |

Reed, under what heading did you find them? I am pretty sure that they are both too long. I can get a rough measurement on the length and post back. I'm not going out right now. It is 12 degrees and 40 MPH winds. |

For some reason they are lister under "Interior" then "accelerator cable." I only found it because I used the search feature. I wouldn't have looked under "interior" for throttle cables. |
