Hi folks, I am sending a 225 up to Sam Powell, and while I had it on the hoist I thought I would break out my scales and weigh it. Specs (as weighed): - 1972 forged crank 225 block, crank, rods, and stock repl cast pistons (+0.060" TRW/Mopar Perf) - mid 60s head with cheap chrome valve cover, stock rocker train, pushrods, spark plugs - regrind cam, double roller timing chain, stock t cover - stock damper with AC and PS pulleys - stock flex plate+bolts - stock water pump, crossover hose, nipples on head, temp sensors in head and block (latter down by oil pump) - stock oil pump with filter and residue oil (none in pan) - custom modified road race oil pan and pickup - dipstick and tube Weight = 398 lbs (+/- 2 lbs or so based on scale errors) Basically this is a complete motor, but with no distributor, fuel pump, intake, exh, or carb. An Edel 500 and Clifford 4V intake are 18 lbs, and the rest is 15-20 lbs. So, this fully dressed engine with shorty headers, 4bbl, dist and f pump is about 430 lbs. This lines up with folks saying the weight of a stock engine is 450 lbs (w/cast iron int and exh and 1bbl). A few extra thoughts: This means the late cast crank (1984) motor in my 64 Dart will be about 385 lbs in fully dressed form (no extra pulleys, no flex plate). A similarly equipped aluminium block 225 should be 340 lbs or so. A stock 170 w/alum int and headers should be pretty close to 390 lbs as well (block+crank also about 40 lbs less than a std forged crank 225). Hope this info is useful to some folks, Lou |

Well, for those keeping track... I weighed these individual pieces as part of a rebuild. 65 block, 147.8 lbs, bare w/main caps and bolts 79 block weighed in the same 65 forged crank, 75.2 lbs, with flex plate, crank gear 79 cast crank, 63.2 lbs, with flex plate and crank gear harmonic balancer, 5.2 lbs 79 head, 79.8 lbs complete (dirty) |

Cool. That is a light forged crank block. Most of them I have weighed have been around 160-165 lbs. Lou |

I have a digital medical scale, it seems to be fairly accurate. The 79 block actually weighed 147 even and the 65 block was 147.8 lbs. That was block only, with main caps. I was just curious because I had heard that the later, cast crank engines weighed less. By my calculations, the 79 engine is about 20 pounds lighter than the 65 engine. The 79 block might drop another pound or so when I get it decked .060. |

When I weighed early and late heads, there was no real difference. I think maybe 1/2 pound, but cannot remember which was heavier. The lifter galley is more open on the early head. Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday Lou. Have a nice, safe trip up. Sam |

I didn't list the weight of the head on my 65 because it has ben shaved and it is currently without valves, springs, etc (getting ported). It does weigh 71.6 lbs bare. |

Early and late heads are similar. The 75-79 heads are a bunch heavier, though - about 10 lbs, IIRC. Lou |

Lou, after reading this post it gives me a reason to mess around in the garage. I had this 1962 aluminum block on a test stand for a month trying to raise it from the ashes. It is complete from fan to bell housing. Both motor mount brackets and rubber pads. Bell housing support brace,flywheel. The only thing missing is the antifreeze. Now for the scale,it has a maximum of 500 lbs..It has my weight at 210 the doctors scale at 206. It as a early (1966) head at 78 lbs. Ok--440/445 lbs. Have no weights for the flywheel,bell housing,bh brace or motor mounts. |

Well, these weights are for the 65 Belvedere parts: Driver side motor mount (metal + rubber) 2.6 lbs Passenger side motor mount (metal + rubber) 3.4 lbs engine/trans brace 1.6 lbs Oil pump (no filter) 6.8 lbs |

Bartvert65, I think you have a much better scale then I have, would you have a weight on an alternator, bracket,and tension arm. I weighed mine at 14 lbs.and not sure how correct that is. Thanks. |

My wife is a nurse and the office she works at was tossing one of their scales because the power supply was bad. I replaced that and the thing works great. I weighed a dual field alternator with a large dual pulley, came in at 13.0 lbs. (the mini 'Denso' alternators are 5.8 lbs) The top alternator tension bar comes in at 0.6 lbs. (I am not certain of the accuracy with things under 4 lbs, but it is close). Cast iron water outlet, 1.0 lbs, the aluminum version-0.2 lbs. I got all sorts of things weighed to help me with modifying the race car. |

FYI, I've read that the 392 hemi is 125 pounds lighter than the old boat anchors of ye olde tymes. b |
