| Post subject: | Wide Wheels damaging rear end? |
I'm in the process of purchasing a 75 Space Duster 225 slant 6 904 auto on the column, will be here next week. Its an all original survivor with 39000 miles except the duel ("y" pipe) side pipes exhaust and the wheels. The wheels are 14x6 in the front and 15x10 in the rear. I have a friend that has been restoring MOPARs for over 30 years and so I was excited to show him what I had found. When he saw the wide tires and assuming this car has the 7 1/4 rear end he suggested that I take off the wide rear tires because he said the 7 1/4 would not last long with those wheels. I'm just wondering if anyone on here has had any of the same experience? Has anyone experienced the wide tires causing any damage or issues with the 7 1/4 rear end? Just getting second opinion because I'm getting the car for my son and he really likes the wide tires. Thank you Hollis |

7-1/4's are not overly tough, but unless he has a penchant for neutral drops or spinning around corners the tires won't hurt anything. On the other hand, if it has air shocks on it to keep the wheel wells off the tires, that could break out the top shock mounts. |

I can not think of any way wide tires would hurt even a 7 1/4 rear end behind a stock /6 unless they were EXTREMELY sticky and used on a prepared surface with a locking differential or had an extreme amount of offset moving the center of contact far beyond the outer axle bearings. Due to bearing arrangement and steering forces wide tires can be hard on front suspension parts but I do not see any similar risks on a solid (not independent) rear axle. This is just my opinion, but if anyone knows of issues I am unaware of I would like to know. |

If the wheel sticks out too far it puts a bending force on the axle which increases the outer wheel bearing load. The ideal situation is to have the middle of the contact patch directly under the wheel bearing. |
