Don't know what happened since last night but now I am getting 0 psi oil pressure. Don't really know what oil pressure I got last night when firing up my new rebuild (didn't have a gauge attached yet) but the idiot light didn't come on after the initial prime.

What the new engine got:
New oil pump
new filter
fresh oil with MOA additive
.040 over pistons
rebalanced crank/ground with new bearings
new connecting rod bearings
new camshaft (stock style)
new fuel pump
new valves/hardened seats/springs
milled head .010
milled manifolds
new manifold studs

last night fired up for the first time no issues oil was getting everywhere it needed to. Got all valves adjusted properly was running sweet..... until this morning. Now I have no oil pressure. Pulled the valve cover again and getting oil to lifters but nothing to the rocker arms. Im pulling my hair out over this one pump should be fine because it's BRAND NEW! Tried a few suggestions this morning I found on the forum here (new filter changed oil again with napa 10W30, and even bought a gauge thinking the oil light switch was bad). The only thing I can think of is the pressure relief valve might have gotten something stuck in it (but what it's a fresh rebuild I can't imagine) or possibly the new pump is just garbage? Just wanted to pick your brains on the forum while I'm tearing my brand new oil pump apart.

was my first thought but if the wire came loose/off the light would never come on...

So does the idiot light stay on all the time? Does an oil pressure gauge actually show 0?

How long did you run it today? With no oil pressure, you would not likely run more than about 10-15 seconds without a severe knock developing.

And BTW getting oil to the lifters with none to the rockers makes no sense; the lifters get oiled by oil from the rocker area above. You probably have residual oil around the lifters still.

I'm not saying it makes sense because it really doesn't. Idiot light stayed on... tried a new switch... same thing stays on... bought a pressure gauge hooked it up and it is reading 0. Pulled the spark plugs and valve cover to crank it and see if there's oil getting to the rockers and the rocker tube is empty of oil but looking down at the lifters oil pools up when cranking on it. I'm still in the process of checking the oil pressure relief valve (had to go get a bigger socket to pull the plug). Another thing noteworthy is I did check to make sure the oil pump didn't lose its prime or anything by cranking it (for a few seconds) with no filter and there was oil coming out of the smaller hole under the filter (not the one the filter screws on to) so I know the pump is still primed.

I did have it running for about 2 minutes before my wife decided to notice the idiot light wasn't turning off, but it never developed a knock... still sounded healthy so there was at least SOME oil getting to the lower end

Make sure the oil pressure sender wire isn't grounding out anywhere along its length. If you truly had no oil pressure, you'd have knocking and you wouldn't have pooling.

When I installed the pressure gauge I removed the idiot light switch and just left the wire dangling (not touching anything) and the light was off on the dash. Still 0 reading on the gauge. Just got the oil pump pulled and nothing seems amiss it's still a brand new pump.

Could it be possible that a cam bearing came loose somehow leaking oil back into the crankcase before pushing oil up to the rockers?

Top end gets oil through the rear cam bearing.
Bearing spin on you?
Possibly an internal galley plug came out?
Plug(s) in the ends of the rocker shafts?

Well I'm out of ideas so the car is getting buttoned up tonight to get towed back to the machine shop. I guess I'm made out of money this year because I am moving in less than a month and need it to drive from Colorado to Washington in about a month so hopefully our friendly machine shop guy can figure it out soon. He pretty much guaranteed that this would be a really sweet running engine when I handed him $2000 to rebuild it a week and a half ago. I'll see what he's got to say about it tomorrow and get back on here to report any new news.

I had a brand new oil pump gear spin on the shaft after the engine got warm. It had oil pressure for a while and then began to spin on the shaft and no oil pressure.

Yep... some (all aftermarket?) shafts aren't keyed on the gear so they can spin. I was able to take the cover off the pump while it was still on the car and take the outer rotor out. I was then able to spin the inner rotor by hand once I got a good enough grip with my fingers.

I am trying to figure how something could have blocked the port on the oil pump that goes to the sensors (pressure gauge or idiot light). If you could run this engine for 2 minutes with no knocks, you are getting SOME pressure and flow.

I wouldn't let the lack if knocking fool you. My bet is on a failed oil pump drive gear.
