I was looking through some old threads and ran across someone who was rebuilding an oil pump and it had an aluminum housing. I thought all the slant six oil pumps were cast iron. Does anyone have any experience with this. Do they wear more than cast iron ones? More importantly, what do they weigh. Stock, cast iron ones weigh in at 6.8 lbs.
Just curious.

My Duster had an aluminum pump on it. It was a '76. Motor had 165K or so when I pulled it, still had good oil pressure. I would think aluminum would be fine as long as you kept the oil and filter changed.

Not positive, but I think OEM oil pumps were aluminum. I have two NOS pumps part number 2463 382. They have an aluminum housing with a steel cover. To the best of my knowledge, the OEM pumps had a 5/8 thick rotor, aftermarket replacement pumps had a 7/8 rotor, and the high volume pumps had a 1 1/8 rotor. Doug should be able to have the correct answer. I have a couple of boxes of used pumps, but don't remember the configuration of them.

Hey Charrlie;
If you find the time, could you weigh one of the OE aluminum pumps?

I weighed both when I swapped to aluminum on the 'Brick. I'll try to find my notes on it.

3 lbs 5 oz with pressure switch.

Also checked the used pumps I have. All the 'thin' (5/8 ) rotor pumps are aluminium.
