So, maybe I have too much time on my hands, but.... Stock oil pickup tube appears to be 3/8 inch. On my big blocks, it is commonplace to drill and tap the block for a 1/2 inch pickup tube. Has anyone done this on the slant six? I haven't really seen any options when it comes to pickup tubes. -Matt |

There's really no need. Most oiling problems center around keeping the drive gears happy and oil at the pickup tube. |

In the BBM as in the Slant 6, simply enlarging the pickup tube diameter will result in no gain or benefit unless you install a high pressure pump. The pump is the restriction or limitation, not the pickup tube size. |

It is hi volume not pressure in conjunction w/hi RPM that creates the need for the increased suction pipe dimension. The slanty is not a volume needy engine by it's design, and the stock pump is quite capable in the RPM zone the 225 operates in for all but the more extreme projects. If you're running loose clearances, and winding a mill to 8000+, the bigger pipe may be needed to prevent cavitation, but only if the volume demand is there. |

This is good info. I usually run a high volume pump on the big blocks however, I am running a stock oil pump on the slant to avoid overtaxing the pump/cam interface. I have gone the extra mile on this slant engine to ensure it has close bearing tolerances. Based on these comments, I'll keep the 3/8" oil pickup. If it ain't broke, it don't need fixin'. Thanks guys. |
