Post subject:  axle swap

Ah, Christmas is nearly upon us and I've decided (and collected parts for about 2 years now) its time for my disk brake upgrade in the front and rear axle swap (from SPB to LBP). I had upgraded from 7 1/4 to 8 3/4 some time ago. Going to KH factory style discs upfront and back was 9" drums, now 10 x 1.75 drums, going to LBP 10 x 2.5" drums.

Q: Do I need to drain the rear case before pulling out the axles, i.e. will it drool all over me, or not? I know how to swap them out, but I've never done it.

thanks all,

Brian

Minimal meaning a few ounces or minimal meaning a few drops?

If all you do is pull the axles, then the only mess will be brake dust and dirt falling out from the brakes and whatever residual oil film is left on the axles. At rest, the oil collects in the pumpkin and along the bottom of the tubes. The bearings form a dam at the end of the axle tubes so oil won't escape unless the axle housing is tilted significantly past horizontal.

Probably minimal meaning a few drops, barring some unforeseen freak accident.

My new axles have green bearings pressed on, so do the old ones, so this is a quick swap I'm thinking. b
