So I've started working on the old 225 again. Back when I was first working on it, cylinder 3 had bad compression(50 psi) as compared to 80-90 psi on the other cylinders. And the spark plug on that cylinder was smashed up really bad. It also smoked really bad! So I pulled the head off today and that same #3 cylinder was completely steam cleaned and shiny, it made me think the head gasket was bad and leaking coolant in that cylinder but the gasket didn't have the tell-tale signs of a blown head gasket though. I couldn't see any visible cracks on the head either, but I'm gonna take it to the machine shop tomorrow and see if they can tell me anything. The piston had a rough feeling, reminded me of that hammered spray paint you buy, the other pistons were smooth, and that cylinder wall was a little scarred up as well...

My question is, what else could've caused this? Anything I might have over looked or not thought about?

Maybe a crack between the valves into the cooling water jacket causing coolant to leak into that cylinder.......

Cracked head most likely. Crack can be between valve seat and intake gasket, or somewhere on roof of combustion chamber in head.

Also inspect the cylinder bore for signs of a crack it may look darkend and pitted around the crack

It could also be a blown head gasket into the water jacket, but less likely. Fingers crossed...

If the plug was smashed, cylinder scarred, and piston top beat up something went through it. If you can feel dings in the cylinder with your fingernail the cylinder needs bored. I would guess that with 80-90 psi compression that motor is in need of boring anyway.
