Post subject:  Flex a form leaf springs?

I was looking into fiberglass leaf springs for my truck, those flex-a-form springs look extremely nice, but how long would they last and are they good for street use? it says in there add they had a set that lasted for 5 years on a drag car (big whoop, 1000bux for 5 years )

anyways just curious to hear what you all think or if you have had any experience with them

ok, got an email back from them, it'd be 420usd to buy the springs and another 300usd to buy there "needed" flex-trac unit. Thus bringing the price right up around 1000bux NOT including shipping which i am unsure of at the moment.

anyways heres the email i got back from them:

Thanks for getting in touch.Yes,we can make a spring for you.Springs will hold up to -70C and you do not need to be out if it's that cold anyway. You will need a traction devise, such as our Flex-trac,or a Cal-trac devise. That will keep your rear end from wraping up. Our price is $420.00 a set plus shipping and handling and Flex-trac is $300.00. Hope to hear back soon.

i think i may check into this alittle more, sounds pretty wicked to me :)

Good info there, Justin. I haven't talked to them yet, but I plan on getting a set for my '64 or my new project car sometime this summer or fall. I would just get the springs for my car since I am not so concerned with launch.

Justin,

Not to sound like a party pooper, but you might consider what that much money would buy you in other speed equipment. Do you really need traction aids yet, and can you save weight in other ways? You can buy a lot of motor stuff for that money (cam, intake, headers), or probably a whole glass front end... Also, I highly doubt you'll need the traction aid system for quite a while, and you can always add it later after you build up your motor and see whether you have hook-up problems.

For me, these glass leafs are a "honing" item for my car, after I have put the motor, trans, axle, brakes, body, etc where I wanted it.

Just food for thought,

Lou

I've heard of needing special springs and shocks to make certain traction devices work, but special traction devices to make a $400 set of springs work????????

Hey Lou,

Your right, but at 60% lighter than regular springs i'm thinking about it, i already have traction aids on my truck (to stop wheel hop and stuff) but your right, thats ALOT of cash to spend.

they say i need there traction aids to help the rear leafs from "folding" up  I have been looking into glass fenders and other stuff but its expensive, I atleast want my truck in low 15's or high 14's and still be streetable, i'm not sure if i'm dreaming or not and if its even possible, according to some 1/4 mile estimators i'd need like 220HP at the rear wheels   to do that, can a 198/2.2 combo even make that power and be streetable??? :( I'd be running 3.93 or 4.11 gears and an OD or i'm currently looking into an A-body 4spd and i'd run 3.55's with it)

yup and the barrel of Q'd continues
