I heard recently that some combine builders used /6's in their machines. Anybody know about this? Can these be used in cars without major modifications? |

Yes they did. Yes, they can. Maybe a carb swap if the combine was natural gas or propane powered, and maybe a distributor swap if the combine distributor did;t have mechanical or vacuum advance. Otherwise, one should bolt right in to a car, provided the car oil pan, oil pump pickup, and motor mounts are used. |

Absolutely a carb swap. The carburetors used on swathers were governed jobs that would poke above your hood eight inches! The one we pulled off the Massey is the largest one barrel venturi I've seen on a slant by an OEM. See how much you can get of the electronics too. They had stand alone electronic ignitions on the later ones. Makes a nice spare system to carry in the trunk when doing cross country trips. No big differences in the distributors, but I'll have to check the governors used. Many had driver's side alternators! The brackets fit the Motorola alternator, but that shouldn't be too much trouble to mod. The flywheels are un-machined heavy truck blanks. CJ . |

Check the pilot on the crank to make sure it matches your trans/flywheel. Also, the damper may be a multi groove, and the pan may or may not fit your vehicle. |

Mongrel; The slant was used in many industrial/ag implements. Airport tug tractors, Haige hi-wheeled sprayers, (I think) White brand LP-powered forklifts. The long block (generally) will interchange, with the aforementioned cautions concerning oil pans, carbs, and in some cases, intakes. Guys; Was it Curtis or Chris-Craft that used them in boats? Chrysler put them in Chrysler boats. I would love to see an original "space saver" installation where the slant was laid flat on its side in tieback of the boat. |

Me too. I've seen pictures of those lay down boat engines but never one in person. As for industrial slant six engines, yes they fit in vehicles just fine. For some reason mine even had a bolt on the damper, which I have never seen in an automotive application. Change the carb, distributor, oil pan and pickup, and you're good. |

I got one from a John Deere Hay Thresher: 1972 HB tagged industrial motor Carb was governed and too small for a vehicle (and the air cleaner stack was too long). Dual Pattern Flywheel like the 1968-1972 trucks would use, requires the Direct Drive starter. Had a bolt on adaptor for a large pulley to drive the belt that in turn drives the thresher and the mechanisms. 1972 Points distributor with vacuum advance Motorola Alternator Clocking plate or adaptor to reorient the carb 90 degrees from the standard carb stud holes. Had the Truck style 3 groove pulley. Oil pan would not fit a car. Once I took the head off the bores had about a half inch of mud in most of the bores, so if you use it as a short block, you may need to clean it out rehone and re ring before trying any long term use in a car... |

I'm going to turn the question around: it doesn't sound like you have (or have ever seen) a Slant-6 engine from a combine, so…why are you asking about using such an engine in a car? Why do you want this?

While asking around for a /6 for my 38 Plymouth, a friend mentioned that they came in some farm equipment. Just looking for options to find a good engine/transmission for my car. I have a 360 from a 89 Dodge van in the car presently and have good pan clearance. The vibration dampener/lower belt pulley are right above the cross member with the 360, so it appears I wouldn't have any pan clearance issues. Looking in the "easy" spots (craigslist, asking friends, tradin' post, etc) I don't seem to be finding ANYTHING. I live around Peoria, Illinois so any help would be appreciated. I even have some $$$$$ to spend on it. Also have 2 1/2 'junkyard' 360's with 727's to trade if someone would be interested. |

If you feel like driving across the state I have a motor you can have. I think I am out of transmissions until I pull the motor/trans out of my Duster. My shop is in Milford. |

It would take a hard to get adaptor plate to do that swap, and the 727 would take some power away from things...the 904 is a lighter better choice when properly prepped for any street slant...
