I've not read everything on this site yet but I think I've discovered another source for new distributors. I bought one from CarQuest Auto for 80 and some tax money. It is nice and tight and all new looking too. I couldn't believe my ears when he said he could get a new one for that price. Gus

Yes... RockAuto also carries these they are made by World Power Systems (WAI)... My next paycheck I am placing an order for 3 of these to dissect, as they purport that they are "new" components, and that per their website that they are specifically made for the year and make of the vehicle (although it's interesting that the same part number much like the cardone and other reman brands is the same 3690 or 30-3690)... Remans have new bodies that are rough cast pot metal compared to the nice machine finished aluminum OEM bodies...but I am more curious to see what governors these have, and if they are "new", or if they are just recycling old mainshaft assemblies like remans and calling it "new".... I also want to see what the pickup looks like , as I would suspect new pickups would be like the Wells brand units...and not the media blasted and recycled pickups that the Cardone unit has. I also will spool these up in the machine to see what the curves are like... If the components are new, but suspect that they would consolidate production to one type of governor for cost savings, I am generally worried that these "new" units may all be long slot governor 1973-1975 style units.... Then again, if they are new governors and decently made, I would be interested in who manufactured them and see if a limited run of 9R or 10R governors could be made for the recurve and street/strip enthusiasts....

I'm driving, so none for me, thanks. Not with real Chrysler new distributors easily available for comparable money.

I am willing to be the guinea pig here. I'm talking about a 300.00 pickup not some NASCAR prospect. Look you guys are really a lot of help here; in a way. In another way some of you are so condescending . . . well forget it. Suffice it to say; I will be putting this new, tight distributor in my old pickup and hope for the best. For all the rest of you out there that have looked at reman after reman and realized that all they've done is bead blast the case and hang a new gear on the end of the shaft; this may be another alternative for our old clunkers that we drive back and forth to town as we hang our heads in shame.

Bash; It's not so much the "reman" thing, it's how they do it. Those cores are stripped completely, and any re-usable parts are thrown in a bin, along with other, matching, re-usable parts. Then, when they decide to do a run of "A975-X" assembly, the parts are cleaned or blasted as needed, assembled with the lowest dollar components that need replacing, perhaps given a bench test, boxed up and sent out the door. More than a handful of us believe in rebuilding what we have, ourselves. We know that the assembly's components have been working well together for a long time, and to freshen them up as needed is the best road to take, rather than throw components together willy-nilly. You are more than welcome to try the "new" distributor as you see fit, but please do report back to the board with your success. That's what a board like this is for. If it fails for you, you save others from going through the same thing. If it's a success, then as you said, it's another option when things go south for any of us. Oh, and do not "hang your head in shame" as you drive your low-buck "clunker" down the road. It's powered by an engine that survived the test of time to the tune of 27 years. That's a fairly long time in the auto manufacturing field. I suspect one of the biggest reasons it was "retired" is that Mopar did not want it's new 3.0 V-6 to have to compete against the slant. Besides; keeping it on the road is the ultimate in recycling. Just think how much more energy would have to be expended to reduce it back to usable raw materials. Good luck.....Roger

Hey, there are SEVERAL folks on the forum here that "we" have found ways to light them up. It's all good, just keep it friendly- as we are, or should be, all friends, even with our own opinions. Recycle? Our 1974 and 1975 Darts are 40 years old. The average life of the thousands of new cars is about 8 years? Forgetting about the cost of recycling an old car, think about the amount of energy and materials to build each new car. That's a savings of 4 new cars for each of our family's Darts! Ain't we eco-patriotic! (And cheap-o's too.)

There is more than one way to skin a cat . One can use a fine blade or a shotgun. I'll probably pick the shotgun every time. Might be messy but it's quick and easy. That's just me. And that, of course, can be taken many ways and should be. I can take constructive criticism all day long. It's the deliberate angst I don't care for. I took my drivers test 43 years ago driving an sl6. I've had many since. They are one of the best, practical American designs out there. I'm all about practical & American so lets all put our guns away and get down to the business of keeping these old wrecks on the road.

Ok guys, you wanted a report on this new distributor so here goes. In a word it's JUNK! Youse guys were right! This particular one the problem is the vacuum advance. The diaphragm is faulty. No vacuum advance. So I'll take I back and keep looking. That's the long and short of it.
