Post subject:  Pistons for 198 rods??

Got my new Hot Rod magazine today. On page 66,68 it is talking about the new Ford 2.3L engine. It has a stock 3.400 in bore. Any hope that these could be forged pistons and help with our piston problems??

Post subject:  Bore is easy, compression height is hard.

There are several pistons in the import world with bores close enough you can fit their pistons in a slant six. The trouble is that slant sixes use a lot of compression height compared to modern piston designs, so the compression may be way too low. I've tried to work out various permutations of rods, pistons, and offset grinding, eventually coming up with a somewhat low compression 225 crank / 198 rod combo with Toyota 3SGTE pistons, and a weird combination involving a 170 block, 198 crank, Mitsubishi 4G63 (Eclipse Turbo) connecting rods, and Nissan SR20DET forged pistons that had about 9.5:1 compression. That would be guaranteed to make everyone at the machine shop ask, "You want to build a <i>what?!?</i>"

Post subject:  vw pistons

If one could figure a way to use VW type 1 pistons we could have an inexpensive source for forged pistons. Available in various sizes including 88mm (3.465"). The problem is the comp. height is I believe about 1.38". I don't know if this would work in a 225 even with 198 rods. Does anyone know how much can safely be milled off the deck?
I'm planning on building the 170 in my '64 Dart I recently became the proud owner of. I was thinking of using these pistons with small block Mopar rods (6.123") This should work out with about .010 to .015" piston above the deck. I think... Anyway just throwing ideas out there.
By the way guys, thanks for the great forum. I've owned a few Mopars over the years but this will be my first slant six build.

over at slantsix.com, there used to be a guy from finnland, his name is Jyri... his nick is Jyera. Here is his homepage :
http://homepage.mac.com/jyrie/Personal.html
He had VW pistons fit on 198 rods, with piston pin bushings. Use his nick in the search function to find his posts or send him an email, he is a very nice guy. Have a look at his homepage ! He once wanted to sell a se of 198 rods with the bushings, I don´t know if they´re gone. good luck

I'm listening, and what about pistons for a 170 block with a 198 crank?and Matt ,,can you give more spacific info on the Mitsubishi/Nissan combo any crank welding involved to match jurnals and do the rods need to be drilled to lube the cam shaft? I'm looking for the easyest way to build a ultra low profile slant, hence, the 170 block is a starting point also I've been on this sight for a couple of years and I don't recall anything done with a dry sump oiling system, I'm facinated with the Valiant/ Lotus 11 used to test the original Hyperpack a friend has a Lotus 7 tucked in his garage with independant rear suspention and inboard disc brakes, the modle(so to speak) of what those chryseler engineers used to modify a sure grip 7!/4 and some day I would like to build a "coupe" with similar suspension , been looking at Nash metros ( to be streached ) as I like the unibody approach but it could end up closer to a cheetah replica,or a Jag 120, i've decided I'm going to build this thing from the inside out and fate will determine the out come as do all things on a budget, I'll let some one else talk now Bruce Johnson

Post subject:  170 stroker

Does anyone know the big end width of 2.2 rods? (5.950 in length) If the width were the same and because of its 1.97 journal size you could either increase the 170 crank .1575" by offset grinding or decrease the 198 crank .100 and have a 3.44 stroke either way. Then use the before mentioned VW pistons and still have a rod to stroke ratio of 1.73 .

What about using mopars 2.2L engine rods in a 170cube engine, from what i've looked into they may be able to be made to work. They'd give roughly .200" more lift to the pistons (an unknown)

The 2.2L's specs are:

Pin Diameter - 0.898
Journal Diameter - 2.083
Rod Length - 5.934

Compared to the 170's specs of:

Pin Diameter - .9007
Journal Diameter - 2.187
Rod Length - 5.719

these are pretty close specs i think, might be possible to work it out :?:

Post subject:  The Mitsu/Nissan trick

This combination right now exists only in my spreadsheet. Here's what I do know about it:

1. The Mitsubishi and Nissan engines use identical piston pins, so fitting the pistons to the rods are no problem.

2. The Mitsubishi rod is 150 mm long and needs only a thousandth or so milled off it to match the slants six rod bearing width. However, the bearings are a tiny 1.89" diameter, making for a lot of turning down the journals. Or the possibility of a lot of offset grinding for a stroker.

3. I have no idea if you'll need to drill the rods. Doesn't a slant get the lube to the camshaft through drilled passages in the block anyway?
