1232 Choke Rod connection at BBD carb choke lever has a connecting clip that bottoms out on the choke lever preventing the clip from locking onto the 1232 choke rod. Anyone come up with a fix such as an opposite handed clip that could be flipped over?

Haven't run into that before. Something looks a little weird about your carb's choke lever, but I can't see it with the clip and choke pushrod in place. Is it definitely for sure a \6 item?

Anyhow, I'd probably just file a notch in the lever to allow the clip to rotate the rest of the way home and be done with it.

(that RTV on the end of your throttle shaft is an interesting idea, but probably will not stick around for very long)

There are opposite handled clips....I bet I have some used ones in the junk drawer.

Im not sure where you would find them where you are.

I agree with Dan. I suspect what has happened is that someone took a V-8 BBD choke piece and installed t 180 degrees off on that choke shaft.

For reference purposes, here is the Carbsonly electric choke kit installed on the slant six in my truck that has a BBD (the sharp eyed among you will notice that this carburetor is actually a 318 BBD onto which I attached the slant six choke bracket. That is irrelevant for these purposes. The 318 carb is not ideal, but it is all I had to work with and I needed to get my truck running):

Here is a picture of a V8 BBD choke linkage correctly installed on a BBD with the choke open:

You will note how the orientation of the eye to the choke shaft centerline is such that the linkage piece is designed to work with the V8 choke thermostat that sits directly below the choke shaft and move the choke thermostat linkage arm straight up and down, as opposed to the slant six shaft that is moved fore and aft with a 45 degree tilt.

Here is a picture of the V8 choke linkage incorrectly installed on a BBD with the choke closed:

This last picture (V8 linkage flipped choke open) most closely matches your picture.

You will see that the choke linkage piece unbolts from the shaft and can be flipped 180 degrees. My advice is to flip your linkage piece 180 degrees (so the slot for the vacuum kick linkage is on the top) and to fabricate and use the V8 choke linkage adapter plate discussed HERE.

You are very close to getting it to work.

FYI- single barrel carb choke thermostat linkage clips, especially for the Holley 1945, are the opposit-handedness form the BBD clips.

Took off activating rod and clip to get clearer picture of the choke lever.
Also testing installing an opposite handed 1920 Carb Choke lever clip (off a 65 Dart slant) installed upside down:

In the picture I am holding the choke closed so that the vacuum pullback is shown (relative to the lever) to be nearly properly positioned to be able to smoothly pull the choke open on activation.

The carb has some of the classic features of a Super Six such as the idle orifice bleed bushings and reduced diameter area venturi above the throttle plates so OVERALL it appears to be a 77 to 79 variety(but missing ID tag).

There is a possibility it went thru a carb rebuild in one of those shops that throws together what they can find in a basket so the choke lever might not match the original??

The operation of the choke by both the 1232 unit and the vacuum choke appears smooth and properly stroking.

It is certaibly possible that somewhere along the line the choke linkage piece was replaced with a non slant six one. And the BBD had many many many applications over the years. Many variations on 318 engines, it was used on the Jeep motors (but I think on Jeep BBDs an integral electric choke was used). If you can get it to work properly using the clip from a single barrel carb, go for it!

A manual choke can actually take a quite a bit more work to get right.
One problem is the arm on the choke shaft isn't long enough to give easily controlled manual positioning of the choke.

Exactly. I hate non-stock manual chokes. Getting the length of levers and angles of cable set right is a pain.

I actually liked the manual choke I put on by BBD very well. I cut off the choke shaft "bracketry" and mounted the arm that came in my choke kit. It started easily and worked great. At least with a manual choke I am in control. I like that. :lol: :lol:
