| Post subject: | Front of slant 6 oil leak |
I have an 1982 Dodge D150. I have been getting bet back road worthy. I took it for a road test today. After I took it about 2 miles and then came back. I could see oil sprayed all around in front of the engine. So started it back up and there is a plate there that when running is leaking oil like crazy. The blue arrow points to the water pump...that may not be oil, but antifreeze... The bushing may be gone and the leak is from the weep hole... if so, then it's a buy a new pump and the gaskets should be in the box... The only other item on the low part of the engine if the residue is oily...is your power steering pump... |

Are the arrows pointing to the water pump, or the timing cover? It could be possible that the oil is coming from the front main seal and the fan is blowing it back. |

I alos concur that if the leak is lower at the timing cover that Coconuteater has nailed it. |

I just ordered new water pump with gasket, timing cover gasket kit and oil pan gasket. Does any one know of a good instructional of putting them on while still in truck? All the ones I see are ppl doing it on an engine stand. |

Removing and replacing the oil pan with the engine in the vehicle is a miserable job. If you don't have access to an engine hoist I understand doing it in the vehicle, but having done this job with the engine in place I would chose to pull the engine. The tutorials you've see still apply. Just look at the pictures while standing on your head. |

If it was home I have a stand but it is at the in-laws an hour away. I work on it the weekends we go to visit. So only have the tools I can throw in the trunk. |

You can replace all that with the engine in the truck, but you'll still need to unbolt the engine mounts and hoist everything up an inch or five. Personally, I'd take the radiator and grille out too so everything's right there, easy access to the front of the block. The timing cover can be a bit annoying where it meets the pan. And while you're in there, might as well replace the timing chain. |
