Stephs car, the 67 with 170 / 3 spd. manual MAY need an engine swap.

So looking ahead; what s6 variants are a direct bolt in with a manual trans?

thanks

If the motor was originally an auto you have to install a pilot bushing in the rear of the crank. Cheap and easy.

Any year.....just swap the original accessories onto the new motor.

When you write "direct bolt in" do you include the oil pan? Not extending the exhaust front pipe slightly? Because if you aren't willing to move the oil pan and pickup tube from one engine to another or extend the exhaust pipe a little bit (a 225 is taller so the manifold flange is higher) then all you can do is bolt in another 170 that has a pilot bushing. If you can swap the pan and rework the exhaust a little you can use most any slant 6 with a pilot bushing or add a pilot bushing to one that lacks it.

Exhaust: not an issue, needs to be reworked anyway.
Oil Pan: What is unique about the 170 oil pan? is it a manual trans issue?
Can you elaborate???

I know there is a large bore / small bore issue with autos and TCs.....but all of the S6s should work IF is has the tranny bushing (.75 dia or so????)

So the outer bore for the TC does NOT come into play?????

No issue with flywheel bolt up?

- - -So if I read you correctly, any year 225 will work as long as:
1) it has the man. trans bushing 2) I put the 170 man. trans oil pan on 3) rework exhaust.....

Yes?

my concern is I may have to find a runner if the orig. engine jumped timing and did valve damage.

It wont have valve damage. Slants are not an interference motor.

Lots of slants have been saved with a chain swap

If you move over the exisitng oil pan and pickup you can put any slant in there. If you get a '68 or newer engine you'll need a large hole flywheel. If the crank is drilled, but not reamed then you use a special, smaller OD pilot bushing. If a large pocket crank is used there is a roller pilot bearing that will fit.

The oil pans are body/vehicle specific.

225s won't have valve damage, but this is a 170 and I'm not sure about those.

You may be right but Im thinking you would know it as soon as you rolled it over if the valves were hitting pistons. He had the plugs out and no damge there.
