I have an Accel SS chrome coil on my stock engine, used with electronic ignition. I have it mounted at the stock location on the engine. It seems to be really hot to the touch after driving. I have never had any problems with it, just wonder if it is supposed to get this hot. I had the same coil on my BB 400 (only the yellow one), and it didn't seem to get this hot. Could it be the ballast resister, since it is the same one that I used with my points ignition? The engine runs nice and cool (185 T-stat). I'm concerned with the long term reliability of the unit, though it has lasted for almost 2 years like this.

i was always told to avoid chrome on underhood parts since the chrome "holds" the heat.

What does Accel recomend for a ballast resistor? I would check and if the value is not the same as your point ballast make the change.

The ballast resistor is there for exactly that reason, to keep the coil from overheating.

I got the chrome one because I thougt I got a yellow one, but that is what was in the box (bonus?). As for the ballast resister Dave, the box didn't have any recomendations as to what to use. Should I use the BR for the factory electronic iginition?

Maybe you should just leave the hood closed and not worry about it.  :D

That would be a good place to start!

There are two BR in the Mopar catalog. 1ohm and 1/4 ohm. Which one depends on ECU and /or coil. I think the 1/4 ohm is normally used on limited usage, like no more than 20 minutes at a low RPM. Take yours to a parts store and see which one it may be. Sounds like you need a bigger ohm rating?
