Hello, new member here. Great site you have here. Gotta ask a question. Got a 64 A100 van. Just rebuilt the slant six in it. 1BBL BBS carter carb. 727 automatic. (converted during the rebuild from a manual). Fresh rebuild on engine, and added this cam: Crane s-264 grind. Exh and Int. lift- .434 at valve, around 265 degrees duration. 42 degrees overlap. Engine runs great off idle, but idles poorly in neutral, and won't even THINK about idling in drive. Drivability off idle is fine. THrottle response is fine. First time messing with a slant six. Do I need a larger idle circuit between the new cam and the automatic? Should I run more initial timing? Set at 5BTDC (static setting since it won't idle) and ported vacuum. Cam set at 0 Degrees. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Tim |

Where did you set the valve lash? I would give the engine more initial advance and more valve lash. DD |

DD, Valve lash is set at .016 intake, and .018 exhaust. Those were the specs. on the Crane data sheet. Tim |

Try setting your initial timing at 10BTDC and see what happens. Also, did you set the valve lash cold or hot? |

Try more initial timing and valve lash, especially on the exhaust side, that may help the idle quality. I have used up to .018 I and .022 E on the Crane grinds and they idled better, if I went looser then that the lash got noisy. Do you have a compression guage? What is the cranking compression reading? DD |

Maybe it's just that your carburetor is too lean at idle. Try to open idle mixture screw more. And what is the idle speed? Joug |
