Post subject:  Who makes the best starter?
The original starter on my 1982 Slant Six D150 went out, and I need to replace it (this one is not easily serviceable: coils shot, gears torn up).

I would like to get a tip or two for the best-built, highest quality rebuilt starter available. (Napa is out, they cannot even tell me where their reman starters are made.)

Any recommendation is appreciated!

P.S.: Who made the originals?

I wish you were in my neck of the woods, I'd just give you one out of my pile...

I would go in this priority:

1) NOS New / Junkyard NOS mini-starter -(good upgrade and easier to get nowadays tell them you have a 1992 Dakota with a 5.2L engine...if junkyard unit have it tested there to make sure it turns over otherwise you have to order and replace a few simple pieces)

2) NOS original style starter - either version is OK

3) If you can wait have a reputable local place rebuild your existing starter.

4) If in a crunch Junkyard original style starter - tell them you have a 1975 Chrysler New Yorker...and hope you get the 1.8HP starter instead of the short nosed 1.5HP starter)

5) Worst case scenario (I mean last resort if nothing above is available):
Reman Mini-Starter (It's chinese and not the best bet), or reman original style starter (but sounds like you local NAPA is out of these)

6) If you are loaded with money and like blowing $400 for a starter you can buy a HP or Ministarter from Power Masters or Robb McNabb.


If you have the low mount starter and it's a direct drive 9 tooth gear starter...you will have to get an NOS, reman, or since it's a truck you can get a Hitachi Style starter from Rob McNabb (you will have to ask for one that is for an "early hemi" with the 9 tooth gear...cost will be about $400 though).

Question: I am unclear what a "Mini" starter is, compared to...a
full-size?

Exactly. The original Mopar starter is almost as big as a loaf of bread. The mini starter is about the size of a large beer can. OK, that's an oversimplification. But compare the Dakota starter (what I'm using) with the original laughing dolphin Mopar starter and you'll see the size difference is substantial.

Its basically the newer starters on the Magnum based motors. But you don't get the trademarked Gear reduction sound.

Well, if you want premium super de luxe № 1 (and will pay for it), it's these guys.

But for (a lot) less money, you can buy a NOS starter or alternator. I'm down to my last one on the shelf (a real nice 60A alternator) but mine's not the only shelf.

I dismantle and clean the one on my lawn tractor every year or two. As long as the armature is not burnt, it's simple.

I had a place that was only maybe 10 miles from where we ate lunch that rebuilt many starters and alts for me. I dont know about shipping to them as they seem to be a bit dis organized, but the older guy loved working on my old Chrysler stuff, espically when I dropped off the generator for the 36 dodge. When I get the rebuilds back, I have never had any issues with them. And they looked show quality pieces. I haven't dealt with them in 5 or so

I can get their number address if interested.

The looks a lot like the one I have,except mine's a Napa rebuilt starter for a 90 something Dakota. Five years, no problem.
