There are about 32 billion varieties of GM alternators, most that the aftermarket's made available in 1 wire.

What are your overall goals? How much current do you need, and at low or high rpm? What's your belt setup like?

Ok, so single 3/8" v-belt. If it's a typical driver without any extravagant electrical demand (welder, non-stock-ish stereo...) then the typical upgrade is a 89 318 alternator, otherwise known as the nippondenso. Removing ~1/8" off the front of the stock bottom cast bracket will let it slide on (it also has a 2-foot style bottom mount, just slightly narrower vs stock). For the top you can get one of the universal chrome arms with a 1/4 circle at the end already slotted.

Can be used with the stock regulator - leads on the alternator end just need to change from blade type to rings. The charging wire needs upgrading.

Check the late model alt thread in the FAQ at the top of this section for more details.
