Ok, you date code experts. Here is a pic of the codes on my A904 trans that is supposed to be a 74-75 non-lockup.

I count 26 splines on the input shaft so I am thinking that this is in fact, a 77-78 transmission (lockup).
I read October 1977 in this code, just making certain.

What's stamped just above the trans pan on the driver side?

If that number is 4130413 then its 225 A904 standard duty with lock-up and no console shift year 1979

Thank you one and all. As I feared, it's a lockup trans.
It was supposed to be a 75 Valiant slant six trans.
Guess it's back to the drawing board.

Not necessarily. It is VERY easy to disable the lockup feature on the 904: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... ing#329608

That is good information to know. My dilemma is that I am putting together a drag racing transmission. It will have a high stall converter, manual valve body, clutches and internal mods specifically for drag racing. I am not certain that I can use a lockup trans for this. I have built numerous 727 racing transmissions, this will be my first 904 and I would like to eliminate any variables, such as lockup features.

I had picked up a 1970 slant six that the owner was swapping out of his 1970 Dart for something bigger...autopsy showed that the #1 piston had a hole the size of my thumb through it, I looked at the A904, that had the same part number...pulled it apart with the intention of putting under my 73 gold duster...parts number told the same tale that Reed and Dan tell... oddly when I pulled it apart...someone had done a very professional job of replacing the guts with a non lock up set of guts from an earlier A904...
always interesting to see what still is intact when you get a "free" setup...

I am not surprised. I have read that supposedly all slant six 904s built after 72 had part-throttle kickdown. However, I have torn apart 73, 79, and 83 904s and only the 79 had the part throttle kickdown. The 83 had even been rebuilt by a shop previously. I thnk the 70s and 80s were a long period of Chrysler plants using whatever parts they had leftover to build cars. Its not like the original purchaser would know enough or be willing to tear apart their frshly purchased transmisison to verify lockup or part-throttle kickdown function.

I think that so long as the input shaft was switched, the non-lockup valvebody could be installed in the 79 case and be fine. You already have the valve body, you just need the input. In fact, I might even have an input shaft and pump body that would work for you. I have a 1969 318 904 I am parting out. I believe the pump and input shaft are still there. Send me a PM if you are interested.
