To lubricate the speedo head you need to put a few drops of lubricating oil on the wick in the speedo head.

Which type of oil is used on the wick?

Don't see why you can't use motor oil, pneumatic tool oil, anything should be fine.

I beg to differ. That is a sensitive instrument, and probably sensitive to oil viscosity. But I don't have an answer. anyone?

That was my thought and why I suggested pneumatic tool oil first (as light opposed to motor oil) as I have used it very mildly recently ld also in gears to repair a 1971 Panasonic clock radio. My initial thought was also "gun oil" as it's very thin but is dirtied very quickly after a few dozen rounds but seeing as this is a speedometer cable this could be a very good choice. I recall having a bottle at one point in time for all-purpose household lubricate for minor locks, door hinges. If your going to think about oil viscosities and their break down points Peanut oil breakdowns at 500F and vegetable oil at less than 300F. I think you can even get away with using vegatable oil. I've used it in applications with higher temps and dirtier than a speedo cable. Thicker oils might make a difference on the speedo reading, but hey, readin at top performance most manufacturers since the 70's retard the speedo's anyways.

What I am say is that from my experience from these old machine is that my most accurate gauge of speed I used was based upon my RPM from an after market Tachometer in reference to the roadside radar speed display. 25mph = 2xxxRPM 45mph=24xx (approximate figures) This is how I always figured speed and is quite more accurate.

No matter what oil is used won't make a difference in reading wise. I always back check my speeds on the radar traps and my 90' Subaru always read 3-5mph above actual to reference of roadside radar and my 1998 Ranger always displays 5 above on my speedo to roadside radar. The Plymouth used to always read 5 below. This is because now companies cannot claim responsibility for oin over the speed limit when in fact they do not appear to be.

I got a little corn fused. To lube the speedo "head' was the question- light oil or??? To lube the cable: pull it out from the top end and use official "speedometer cable lubricant" from any source. There is a thread on the cable lube somewhere in here.

Man, you guys are waaaaaaaaaaay to anal with what to use! Whatever oil you do use, if you use enough of it, it will leach and eventually end up and somewhat contaminate what's in the pan. What is so wrong with just using plain ol' tranny fluid? Are you people really that blind or just fail to look at the big picture here?

You basically reflected everything I said. I actually recall one point at time as using gl5 for tranny licking head moval
