Was doing a super six swap and I recently found out I hav a cracked block directly below the exhaust manifold and need to take the original motor out of my 67 dart. I have a 225 out of an 1981 D100 I plan to put back in. Looking for advice on parts I will need to transfer over from the old motor to the new motor. I hear there are issues with the 904 transmission and crank pilot hole and I need to locate an adapter? I do have a 1971 transmission in the garage that I can steal parts from if needed. Also, the oil pressure sender is different. Is that an easy part to switch or do I have to change the whole pump?

Looking for some basic do's and don't do's and if there are any upgrades/maintenance items I should do to the new motor before putting it in.

Thanks for the help!

If you are going to keep the 67 transmission, you will need an adapter for the crank pilot hole as they changed in 1968. I don't see any reason you can't use the newer transmission (if it works).
Also, the crank in the 81 motor is most likely a cast crank, so you will need to keep the harmonic balancer that is on it. Other than that, you should be able to swap accessories, pulleys, intake/exhaust with no trouble.
Keep the oil pressure and temp sensors from the 67 engine as they will be particular to the gauges/lights on the 67 Dart. They could be the same, but better safe than sorry.

Any leads on where to find the adapter? The only thing about the '71 transmission is I have no history on it. I know the one in the car functions as it should. Now, I don't know if the one that is in the car is original. it may have the adapter already on it?

I am thinking I got mine from Charrlie_S, on this forum.
If you can't get one, I still have the one I got. I would like to keep it but I am not going to use it anytime soon.

I just thought of something else that may be different between the early and late motors. Most truck applications have a rear sump oil pan and cars are usually center sump. It is an easy swap, but something to look at.

So the transfer list so far: The oil pick up and pan, the oil and temp sensors, the fan and pulley as I have an A/C car, the coil and distributor until I'm ready for HEI. Wish I could swap valve covers but can't due to the late model head even though I like the '67 style it's a cleaner look.

I'll look for the adapter for the trans. Any chance to see a picture of the part? That way if one of the transmissions I have has it, it will be a bonus.

Any gaskets, seals, freeze plugs I should just go ahead and change while the motor is out and everything is easy to get to? Doing a good flush while out will probably be a good idea. I have a new water pump laying around I can put on just because its out. Also, I'll check the timing chain while its out.

And up for popular opinion the paint..... should I go blue or red like the original was? I'm leaning red.

If you have the motor out I would go ahead and replace all the gaskets. You can swap the heads if you REALLY want to keep that early valve cover. If the freze plugs aren't leaking and look good, leave them alone. Take the opportunity to remove the coolant drain plug on the passenger side of the block and make sure the opening isn't blocked.

I can take a picture of the adapter when I get home from work. I don't think you will find one unless somebody bought one and installed it. Basically, the older engines had a smaller torque converter snout. The 68 and later cranks have a larger crank hole to accommodate the larger torque converter snout on the later transmissions.. You can use a later crank on an earlier trans with the adapter. I think it is a custom part. I think it was only about $25 shipped but I could be wrong.
I was going to use it on my 79 engine/65 transmission but decided to go another route with the trans.

Charlie sells the adapter rings. Pan, pickup, motor mounts and sensors from the old motor. Look at the timing cover/water pump on the new motor to make sure they match as the timing pointer location changed in there somewhere. The distributor needs to match the ignition in your car too.

Also, the '81 motor will have the hydraulic valvetrain in it. I personally would pass on changing the head. The late head also has the hardened seats in it if that is of concern to you.

All in all, there are very few parts that won't interchange between generations.

Great info. I'm going to keep the newer head on it. How about the rear seal? Don't know how often those go bad in slants but while its out?

It's infinitely easier to change the front and rear seals while it's out. Might as well change the oil pan and timing cover gaskets too. I'm not sure but your truck head may have an AIR injection pump hole at the back, and if so you need to plug it. I plugged one in a 1984 hydraulic head with a copper plumbing fitting. I learned this the hard way.

I have two gasket kits that came with the car when I bought it. I'll have to see what all came in it and then order what I don't have

What's the easiest way to install that trans adaper? Does it need pressed?

I have one of those all inclusive gasket/seal kits for the slant. Are there differences between the years I should be aware of as in seal size/gasket size? I want to have all of the parts ready to go for next weekend. As soon as I get the motor on the stand ill post the stamps on the block to determine what year and vehicle it came out of if someone here can help with that.

If I do remove the head, to make sure everything internal is in good shape as other than a story I have no history on the motor, can I reuse the head bolts or should I get new head bolts?

Engine should be on the stand by Tuesday and the old engine will be coming out Friday. I've posted pictures over at FABO if anyone wants to follow along.

'81 and up motors take a different valve cover gasket. Other than that most everything is pretty close.
