Very weird. Never seen this happen. Even though the UCA is sort of "threaded" to take the new ball joint's threads, this ball joint assembly blasted right out through the top of the upper control arm. Installed new 9 years ago. I suspect maybe over-torqued and compromised the "sort-of' threads, then finally failed. Left top, which makes sense, as the wife flies down the street hitting the driveway ramp in a hard left turn. (Married 43 years, stopped trying to train her a long time ago.)

Good excuse to upgrade to tubular arms and a sportier spring and shock setup. |

Ha Ha!!! Wife's daily driver 4-door Dart SE, 280,000 miles. She already thinks it's a lousy race car, but drives it that way anyway. (That would be 6th project on the priority list.)

I would check out the other side. Not unusual to have these replaced in pairs. I would also replace the upper control arm on the side that failed. I couldn't trust it after a failure like that. |

One of the first things I replaced on my '63 were upper ball joints. In my ignorance, I pressed them out and back in. It lasted a couple weeks... When i did it again, I struck an arc in 3 spots on the nut. I figured that I could just grind off the weld if they needed it again.... or as was mentioned, tubular upper arms. |

Do you have to drill or grind out the small joint mounting area on the arm before welding in the sleeve? For $15 that might be a way to get started on my 64 Dart to Mount up the Volare Spindles! I torched out the original ball joint mount and welded the sleeves in place. Be careful as clouds of smoke from the old grease can flare up when the oxygen stream is introduced. I kept my eyebrows, but it was close. |
