Post subject:  Coolant Temp Sensor

What have you guys who have done megasquirt used for coolant temp? Have you just created a calibration for the stock sensor? Added a sensor in a pipe somewhere? I saw on rockauto.com a two terminal sensor for the slant six that would allow the use of the sensor ground.

I drilled/tapped my stock 1/8" npt hole to 3/8" npt and used the all too common GM 2 wire unit. You can still do it with the head on the car - yank the thermostat and shove a rag in there to catch the shavings. f you ever wanted to go back you can use a bushing. Some heads may have enough meat in that area to drill a second hole.

Later "emissions heads" already have a 2nd port for vacuum switches etc.

I say keep the stock sensor so that your O.E. Ma MoPar temp gauge in the dash will work and then drill a second hole where needed,
Some will argue if the head is the best place to put a sensor for EFI purposes.

The Coolant drain in the block or drilling another area like this could work as a possible better alternative,


And yes Just use the GM 2 wire as proposed on the Megamanual info.

my current set up is for a track only car, no need for heater hoses, so I removed the heater hose fitting from the head and put the GM sensor there.

I would use the coolant drain, like Greg O mentioned before I would drill / tap some random location in the block - head that was not dimensioned for the wall thickness needed for a 3/8 inch tapped hole. Look at other drilled - tapped through holes in the block - head. You will see that the wall thickness is increased in those areas.
The coolant in the lower extremes of the block may warm up slower than the coolant in the head, but you should be able to comp for that in tuning.

There are some heads that have extra sensor bosses cast into the head, around the thermo area, that were not drilled - tapped by the factory.
making an un-tapped cast boss functional would be fine.
