Post subject:  Timing possibly?

I just rebuilt my engine. I got my number one cylinder to tdc. Lined my cam and crank dots up. I have gas and fire. It's back firing through the carb. I rotated the plug wire each way and got back fire through the exhaust. Any ideas?

When the timing marks on the sprockets line up the engine is on TDC for #6. Turn the engine 360°, line up the timing mark on the damper, then install the distributor for firing #1. Or just point the rotor to #6.

Also, double check the firing order & valve lash settings.
1-5-3-6-2-4

For a first start on a fresh engine, the valve lash is better a little loose then a little tight.

Sorry I'm not understanding you lol... Do I need to bring number 1 up or number 6?

Both. Cylinders 1 and 6 move as a pair, but 180 degrees out of phase in the four stroke cycle.

Without taking the timing cover off agin, can I just move the plug wires 180 degrees?

No need to remove timing cover.

Remove distributor, rotate 180 degrees, reinstall.

I got a cough out of it as if it was going to crank but that's it. It's getting fire and fuel

Hopefully it runs Ok for you but none of the last 6 or 8 engines I have put together had the dots in the right place. Degreeing the cam is the only way to know.

Ditto. I have dealt with new timing sets with the alignment dots as far as 8 degrees off.

It ran but it didn't seem right..it's sitting on the ground running. I think I will take the cover off and degree the cam. When I originally built the engine, which was two years ago, I don't remember what my cam specs were. How will I go about that?

that is good, I thought something was wrong with me!! I never install a cam by dot location. it always seem to be a crap shoot.
