Hello,
I'm looking to do the HEI upgrade.
I have a 1987 /6 D150 with a 1945 carb. Will this carb work or do I need to get a different one; if I need to get a different carb which should I get and if anyone has a link for one.
I know I need to get a different distributor also. If anyone has a link that would be great.
I also replaced my original coil with a MSD blaster 2 canister coil. Will this coil work with the HEI upgrade.

All you answers are on the board, but quickly:

1. The carb will work so long as it has ported vacuum rather than full-time vacuum. Ported vacuum is needed for the distributor.
2. Any non Lean-Burn electronic distributor will work, but the suitability of the advance curve is a crap shoot. Any parts store can supply one for say a 1978 Volare with a 225 and a 2 bbl.
3. Yes, but square HEI?Ford TFI coils usually work better and longer. Maybe much longer than a Chinese MSD coil.

Josh nailed it. If the carb on your 1987 truck is original, you will need to get a different carburetor. Get one for a late 1970s Holley 1945 to minimize differences in vacuum fittings on the carbs. The 1987 carb will not have the correct port for a vacuum advance on the distributor.

And I second Josh's recommendation for a Ford E-core coil. Ford products from the late 80s to late 90s used them. Any junkyard should have at least one or two kicking around.

I'd regard that as a second-preference carburetor. Call the company Reed linked and see if they can provide you with a Carter BBS (original carb number 7044s) for a 1974 Dodge D100 with 225 six-cylinder engine. If so, jump on that. If not, fall back to the one Reed linked.
