After having sat for a few months I can not get my slant to consistently idle. I have rebuilt the carb it needed it. I have adjusted the idle. I can get the car to run as long as I feather the accelerator or I turn the idle up to like 1600-1800 rpm. Is it possible that the valves are in need of adjusting which is preventing the idle? I am not really hearing much chatter from them.

Valves too tight will cause your problem. So will a vacuum leak. So will an exhaust leak into the intake tract. So will an incorrect or faulty PCV valve. So will other problems. Start with a valve adjustment and careful check for vacuum leaks and a strong flashlight down through the carb to check for manifold floor cracks.
