Post subject: | Resurfacing Intake & Exhaust Manifolds |
My 1964 Valiant with 225 is leaking from both intake & exhaust manifolds at the head - the exhaust manifold may be cracked but will deal with that also. Due the exhaust & intake manifolds need to be surfaced or will just cleaning them and putting one of the new grafite gaskets available be enough to seal? Thanks |

You can rub it on a flat surface with sandpaper. |

Put a straight edge to them when bolted together. There shouldn't be much gap anywhere, say less than 1/16" in any area. As DD says in his tutorial (see his webpage, Dutra.org) look for warpage at either end of the exhaust manifold. Yes, you can sand them together on a smooth surface, or a rotary sander or I just used a belt sander and kept checking with my straight edge. I used a piece of 2" angle iron as long as the manifolds. When I could see only a small gap, like 1/16" inch or less anywhere along all the manifold runners, then I was good. I have Dutra duals, but still you have to check the alignment across all runners. Be careful when sanding if you have aluminum intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds, aluminum sands much faster than cast iron (though both are easy to sand). http://s785.photobucket.com/user/67dart ... ort=3&o=14 Also, yes, Remflex will take care of the rest. Check the vertical alignment of the exhaust manifold runners with their respective ports....I think that was DD's commentary. No amount of planarizing will solve vertical misalignment of port to runner... If that is way off, time to get a new exhaust manifold. b |
