Post subject:  Installing Dutra Duals

So...I'm now the proud owner of a pair of Dutra Duals...and I have a couple of questions...

It's a '73 Dart with a 225 /6. I've upgraded to most of the Super Six with a 2 bbl intake and Carter BBD.

To install the Dutras do I:

a) need to surface them similarly to how I've had the machine shop resurface the older intake & exhaust manifolds? These are the duals that don't mate with the intake manifold. Are there any alignment tricks I need to do?

b) do I need any different hardware other than the stock bolts, end bolt brass washer, triangle/spanner washers?

c) is there any downside to driving to the muffler shop with the open pipes (noise notwithstanding)? The car needed an exhaust when I first got it and figured it would have a V8 in it soon so I put in single pipe to dual exhaust so they just have to plumb into that setup (didn't think I'd stick with the /6, but glad that I have).

I've read this article: http://www.slantsix.org/articles/manifo ... unting.htm but I'm just double checking.

Thanks!

If it's dual duals rear manifold is like the front one...

a) I would check the thickness of the dutra flanges vs. the stock manifold to see if you will need to do a little shave on them, or shim them...you also want to mock them up and make sure you don't have any grinding to make sure it all fits with some space between the runners for when they get hot...
I used a spare head and pulled the valves to check alignment...
One other item...on test fit to the block, you may need to grind off the "nub" at the top of the block where the cylinder head mates up toward the front of the block, it may interfere with the dual flange and alignment.

b) You will just use the same hardware if it's all in good shape.

c) You will need to buy some generic flanges with a "start" tube, and buy some flex to clamp to it...the open exhaust out the side would cook your fender paint, windshield washer reservoir, starter wire....etc...

Another item to note...since you have a high starter, you will need to switch to one of the denso ministarters, or smaller diameter starter as the rear dual out let is very close to the high mount starter and the exhaust shop will have some fun doing the routing... you might also let them know you want the "head" pipes sectioned so if you remove the engine, you can unbolt the "header" section and not have to remove the full length of pipe, or cut and weld it up again....

Also after you get the finished pipes completed check your carburator settings to make sure it isn't lean if this is going to unrestrict the pipes or put a collector in the works...

A few thoughts to consider.

Good luck.

Thanks DusterIdiot, it's always refreshing to have someone remind you how much I seriously don't know. I'll do some test fitting this week and see what I'm in for.

As far as a mini starter, I can just get one of the newer 90's dakota starters, right?

Correct...just ask for a 1992 Dakota 3.9/5.2L, and you will be good to go.

Post subject:  Pipes

When I did mine, I ran two flex pipes down to bottom of engine compt. Was loud on acceleration. Not too bad except for fumes. Had shop follow V8 routing up to front, then "custom" from there.
