Post subject:  Engine ID and Timing

The Slant Six in my 1970 Dodge Truck is a newer version, but I am not sure how much newer. It does have the newer style head with no drool tubes.

The front of the block has this stamped on it:

5K225 8657 1

122573 074

The drivers side of the block has this number cast in: 4201 330

From these numbers, does anyone know what year my motor was built? I thought it was around 1978. I can't find it on the web.

I am trying to get the specification to set the timing. It is this motor with a stock cam, 2 BBL Carter BBD, and HEI Converted Ignition.

Thanks, Craig

Built on 10 April 1985. The timing setting for an '85 truck doesn't apply to your truck, which has HEI rather than the '85 Lean Burn system. Try an initial timing setting of 5° BTDC with the engine idling at 700 rpm, the vacuum advance disconnected and the hose to the carburetor plugged (don't forget to unplug the hose and reconnect it when you're done adjusting the timing).

Update:

After about 18 tries, I finally got the timing right. Dan was right on with 5 degrees BFTDC. It runs great at that point.

My main issue was that the HEI mod black and white wires were wrong. When they were wrong, I just couldn't get the timing right. After I tried the wires switched, I was able to bring it in.

Very happy! Finally got to drive the D100 around the block. On to other issues.
