| Post subject: | Couple of crank questions. |
Hey everyone I have a 63 dart all original 73000 mile engine besides the electronic ignition. I was gonna pull the motor to address some leaks and freshen it up a bit with new bearings rings cam and lifters and was wondering if there is a way to tell if I have a cast crank or a forged crank without pulling the motor. I ask because this is a daily driver and I don't have time to pull it and wait for parts. Also would it be a good idea to get the .001" undersized bearings. |

If it is an original 1963 engine, then you have a forged crank. No options there. 0.001 bearings are getting difficult to find, so if you want some, you better start looking now. I think they are easier to get for the forged crank than the cast crank. Personally, I wouldn't get oversized bearings until I did some measuring. You might be able to get along fine with standard bearings. FYI, I tore down a 65 slant six with just under 60,000 original miles on it and the timing chain was tight as a drum (all steel too). |

Yep...pull it and mic the journals...I have a couple of forged cranks that were "high milers" and were within tolerance and didn't have problems when pounded with high rpm and high compression....
